US Secretly Helped Yushchenko

In the midst of the battle for a new election in Ukraine, US doctors were flown to Vienna to assist in treating Mr. Yushchenko after he was poisoned.

"When the poisoning took place, they were having trouble getting any breakthroughs in Europe, so they asked us if we could help," McConnell said.

The US involvement was kept secret because of the nature of the election. Yushchenko was pro-Western Europe (Ukraine is currently seeking entrance into the EU) while his opponent had strong ties to Russia. The US didn't want to influence the election. There is even some speculation that Russia is the source of the poison.

The U.S. official said there are indications that the substance found in Yushchenko's body was similar to highly concentrated dioxin produced by a Russian lab earlier in the decade. Zimpfer declined to comment, except to say that prosecutors are working to identify possible sources.

It's over enough that I don't worry about getting nuked by the Russians. And it's also over enough that the US and the Soviet Union don't fight Third World proxy wars with each other. Competing candidates in a Ukrainian election isn't quite like guerillas vs. death squads in El Salvador.

Im sure the media will be all over a positive story about how the US Government did something good.

Yeah you still do. There are still enough nukes still pointing at america from Russia and at russia from america to destroy the planet and accidents can very easily happen.

I know how incredibly irritating it can be when someone says "I'm older than you, so I know better," and I apologize for it. But I really have to say you don't know how it felt] before Gorbachev came to power in the Soviet Union. I am (just barely) old enough that my childhood friends and I used to seriously wonder out loud if the world would end before we got out of high school. Those days really are over. It was a lot scarier when Stalin was still in power, and during the Cuban missile crisis, but I obviously have no memory of that.
