Bashir's Sentence - The Long and the Short of It

SATURDAY MARCH 5 2005 10:50 PM

Submitted by TheFuckOffKid. Edited By Michael_J_Totten.

Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir received a two and a half year sentence over charges he conspired in the Bali bombing that resulted in hundreds of deaths. Australian authorities and the families of victims were astonished at the leniency, especially given Bashir's time already served will be counted as part of his sentence.

One of the tactical issues surrounding the sentencing is whether it will spark more terrorist attacks.

THE sentencing of Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir over the Bali bombings could provoke fresh terror attacks, Australian Federal Police Commissioner Mick Keelty warned yesterday.

Mr Keelty's warning came as the US joined Australia in condemning the 30-month jail sentence handed out to Bashir on Thursday as too lenient - prompting Indonesia to mount a spirited defence of its legal system.

But Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said intelligence agencies had not advised him of any increased terror threat to Australia after the Jakarta court found Bashir was the emir, or leader, of terrorist group Jemaah Islamiah.

Another issue is that, in reality, Bashir's conviction was based on flimsy evidence.

The case against extremist Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir was so flimsy it would have been thrown out of an Australian court, according to Tim Lindsey, director of Melbourne University's Asian Law Centre.

"It's a miracle he was convicted at all, there was no concrete evidence," he said.

His views were backed by Greg Fealy, of the Australian National University, who said the case was so weak that prosecuting him had been counterproductive.

"It's counterproductive if you cannot mount a persuasive case against him because it just encourages doubt about the terrorism issue in Indonesia and the motives of foreign governments," Dr Fealy said.

How legal systems around the world respond to the (ahem) Age of Terror is something to keep an eye on.

Abu Bakar Martin Bashir, the Islamic terror mastermind and journalist?

Confusing, I know.

Australia deserved the Bali bombing for their imperialistic foreign policy and support of Israel. It's a case of the chickens coming home to roost.

Exactly whose arguments are you parodying here?

Any particular members of SG Liberals, or just "Democrats" generally?

The "general apologies"?

Not many of the people who regularly and vehemently disagree with you on this site think the US "deserved 9/11", just as I don't think Australia "deserved Bali".

whatever

Not many here about 9/11, none about Bali. I am just saying there are very many who believe America had 9/11 who had it coming for its transgressions.

The few people who might say that the root cause of Islamic terorism may lay in Islam itself (such as people at http://www.littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/) are dismissed as racist cranks.

But if America was justifiably hit by terrorists for its terrible foreign policy and support and support of Israel, why then was Australia?

So ... most of us aren't saying the US deserved 9/11 or Australia deserved Bali, but you decided to respond as if we did.

Just trying to get things clear here.

I never voted for Bush. Oh, wait, I'm Canadian. Never mind.

Anyway, the name "Abu" keeps reminding me of "Apu" on "The Simpsons". Draw your own conclusions.

Yes. Oddly enough, it's as though a third world country is setting some major Western powers an example.

I mean, this trial is troubling in a number of ways, but at the very least you can point to it and say "The guy went to court."

It is sad to me that we have gotten to the point where some people can justify the death of civilians because some Government had it coming.

Many of the people that died on 9/11 or in Bali most likely had nothing to personally do with government policy or aiding Israel.

So, what exactly is the justification for the terrorist again? You seem to think you know all the answers Stockula...so what are they.

Martin Bashir makes a hideous documentary where the self-styled "King of Pop" is strong armed into admitting he takes little boys to bed with him.

Abu Bakar Bashir does something as innocuous as using religion to persuade suicide bombers to murder hundreds of people at a holiday resort.

Martin Bashir goes to court and is lauded as some sort of hero journalist, while Abu Bakar Bashir goes to court and gets two years in prison.

Where's the justice?

Your attempt at wit is even more thinly stretched than stockula's.
