Kelli Davis, a lesbian teen wearing a tuxedo in her senior yearbook picture is the subject of another human rights controversy in north eastern Florida. More than 200 people from the community turned out to debate the issue on behalf of Kelli.
"This is not to be treated as a gay rights issue," said her mother, Cindi Davis. "Rather it's a human rights issue."
Principal Sam Ward of Fleming Island High School was backed by school officials for ordering the picture to be cut out of the yearbook. One student was even fired from the yearbook staff because she refused to remove the picture of Kelli.
Others applauded Ward's decision, including Karen Gordon, who said, "When uniformity is compromised, then authority no longer holds."
There is no set dress code for senior pictures but the school supervisors do have the right to set limitations and standards. After going to private schools most of my life and adhering to a dress code, I can say that dress codes are condusive to the desire for chaos. So what do you think about all of this? Is it all just a rant over nothing?
