That's TERRIBLE and loaded with disresepect.
The girl in the tux along with the lady fired from yearbook both deserve apologies. Also, action needs to be taken to fix the homophobia present, it's unacceptable under any circumstances.

No, it's a rant for something. No administrator has the right to remove the picture of a lesbian student because she is wearing a suit. They can say it was because of her attire all they want, but everyone knows its not because of what she wore, it's because of what made her want to wear it.

That's a scary, scary statement right there. Aside from the homophobia implicit in the principal's actions - that statement could easily lead to just as destructive actions against any number of minorities.

For example, if the school has a predominantly white population, what's to stop them from cutting out African American students' pictures ... to preserve uniformity? Or Hispanic students' pictures? Or all the female students' entirely? Where does it stop?

Besides, whose authority is threatened by women wearing tuxedos? Personally, I think that's kind of sexy.

This is sooo wrong and ridiculous! The whole bullshit about maintaining order is hypocritical. It's not as though she wore her bathingsuit in the picture, and I'm positive they wouldn't stop a male student from wearing a tux. Their homophobia and hypocrisy is transparent.

Besides, aren't there bigger issues the administration needs to focus on like education, and broadening children's minds instead of stifling their creativiity and indivuality?????

Individuality taught in school? Seemed the opposite was pushed in the school that I was in. My last year of school we had to start wearing uniforms and start wearing IDs around our necks. Kids could dye their hair certain colors and they were limited to the makeup and nail polish they could wear.

The whole thing pisses me off. Schools suck these days, that's all.

Also: She couldn't wear a tux but I bet the wouldn't have cared if she was wearing a female pants suit, or whatever they are called.

Just playing devil's advocate, but do you think that if a gay male student had worn a gown they would leave the picture in the yearbook? Highly doubtful.

Yet the picture of Greta Garbo in a tux, is considered "classic"...

At first, I must have read this the way I wanted to hear it. I thought it said, "When uniformity is imposed, the authority no longer holds." That seems like a more accurate statement to me.

If you want an honest, un-PC answer....I'd say that a girl wearing a tux is much less of a distraction than a guy wearing a dress.

Gay males do not normally wear dresses. lesbians do not always wear "male" clothing either.. In any event, girls are more likely to wear tuxedos at prom than seeing a guy wear a gown. Even "straight" girls who have tomboyish traits have been known to wear tuxedos. It was accepted when I was in high school....of course, I'm originally from Washington State. Minds are more open there than in more conservative states like Florida, where rigid conformity is some kind of perverted "value".

if they have final say over what gets allowed in, then whats the surprise? yeah it sucks, but really, is it that big a deal? the fact that she is lesbian i think is incidental. im all for gay/lesbian rights, and am, in fact, a member of the local gay/lesbian alliance even though i am neither. this is just an unfortunate incident.

The whole point of a yearbook is its a memoir for the students, not some idealistic ego boost for the administrators. They might not have let a gay student wear a dress, but they SHOULD. Otherwise, dont bother with the whole yearbook, because controlling every single thing that goes it makes it a sham and a parody of what its supposed to be. Ok I understand that there should be some boundaries of good taste, but a woman in a tux or man in a dress is HARDLY explicit, obscene or rudely vulgar.

That is really appalling. It's true -- they wouldn't stop a male student from wearing a tux in his photo, would they? And firing the student who refused to remove the photo? That's absolutely ridiculous, but I'm proud of her, whoever she is. The more people stand up to these kind of bozos, the better.
