Greenpeace Protesters Thrashed by Oil Traders

Protester organizer's meticulous planning for a raid yesterday on London's International Petroleum Exchange missed and important detail: oil trading is an occupation for young men…brutally aggressive young cockney men.

WHEN 35 Greenpeace protesters stormed the International Petroleum Exchange (IPE) yesterday they had planned the operation in great detail.

What they were not prepared for was the post-prandial aggression of oil traders who kicked and punched them back on to the pavement.

“We bit off more than we could chew. They were just Cockney barrow boy spivs. Total thugs,” one protester said, rubbing his bruised skull. “I’ve never seen anyone less amenable to listening to our point of view.”

Another said: “I took on a Texan Swat team at Esso last year and they were angels compared with this lot.” Behind him, on the balcony of the pub opposite the IPE, a bleary-eyed trader, pint in hand, yelled: “Sod off, Swampy.”

At least now the world knows where soccer hooligans get their beer money.

The protesters took some lumps because they did not understand the workings of the system they came to protest.

2) Unfortunately, when you look at where donation money goes in the "not-for-profit" organization of Greenpeace, it goes to lining the pockets of those in charge of the org, not into peaceful demonstrations, television ads, newsprint, or even funding private research into alternate fuel and energy methods. Nope. It make an elite few relatively wealthy while their lackeys go out and get beat up by "oil thugs" who are attacked for supporting their families.

Could you supply a link for that? Thanks!

Before I supply the links to said information, I feel obliged to state that the internet and the information found thereon isn't the end-all-be-all of investigation.

That said, here are your links:

A news article covering non-profits in general:

A news article covering Greenpeace (don't read it if you like them)

The study used as source data:

An organization where you can get the IRS 990 forms for Greenpeace (and others), but which requires a membership and you must pay for some features:

Hope that helps.

According to the link you provided the executive officer of Greenpeace makes $70,600/year, their COO, $50,000/year, their senior financial manager makes $18,000/year their staff attorney $8,000/year. The total compensation for their seven officers is $300,000 a year. This doesn't seem unreasonable to me, and is significantly lower than the compensation for executives in the for-profit sector.

smithers_jones,

How much do they pay their lobbyists? What are the qualifications for their lobbyists? Are their executives also operating as lobbyists, speakers, and other off the books consultants?

Checking the financial returns of the people associated with with Greenpeace operations is the way to look at this, not the corporate boilerplate.

Honestly, I don't know that Greenpeace is fiddling the books on their executives. I strongly suspect that their lobbyists and fundraisers are pulling down a substantial portion of the total reciepts of the organization. This is just how NGO's work.

VirtuallyLucid made a claim that "donation money goes in the "not-for-profit" organization of Greenpeace, it goes to lining the pockets of those in charge of the org" then provided links to evidence he purports demonstrate that fact. I read his evidence and not only did it not establish that, it established just the opposite--that those in charge of the organization are not paid very much and in fact are paid significantly below that of people in similar positions in the for-profit sector.

I have no idea what Greepeace pays their lobbyists and apparently neither do you. I don’t even know that Greenpeace has lobbyists. The document provided by VirtuallyLucid, which was written to expose the outrageous salaries of Greenpeace employees doesn’t list any. It lists a total of 9 employees receiving total compensation of $400,000 a year. That averages out to $44,000 a year per employee. This hardly seems outrageous. If you have better evidence, let me know. Your claim that Greepeace pays people off the books is pure speculation and as usual, you have no evidence to support your claim.
