Greenpeace Protesters Thrashed by Oil Traders

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 22 2005 2:40 AM

Submitted by Patrick_Lasswell. Edited By Sean.

Protester organizer's meticulous planning for a raid yesterday on London's International Petroleum Exchange missed and important detail: oil trading is an occupation for young men…brutally aggressive young cockney men.

WHEN 35 Greenpeace protesters stormed the International Petroleum Exchange (IPE) yesterday they had planned the operation in great detail.

What they were not prepared for was the post-prandial aggression of oil traders who kicked and punched them back on to the pavement.

“We bit off more than we could chew. They were just Cockney barrow boy spivs. Total thugs,” one protester said, rubbing his bruised skull. “I’ve never seen anyone less amenable to listening to our point of view.”

Another said: “I took on a Texan Swat team at Esso last year and they were angels compared with this lot.” Behind him, on the balcony of the pub opposite the IPE, a bleary-eyed trader, pint in hand, yelled: “Sod off, Swampy.”

At least now the world knows where soccer hooligans get their beer money.

Greenpeace is just another example of things that start off all good and nice and all but become totally worthless as humans excercise their greatest passion....taking things too far.
As a moderate, greenpeace is just not something I can relate too. If you do extremist things, then you deserve any bad things that might come your way. Its part of the equation.

That having been said, maybe instead of raiding petroleum exchanges, they could things that make a difference. Reducing their own personal dependence on oil sounds like a good start.

The amount I've spent on maintaining my bicycle since I've had it (about two years now) is less then what most people spend on gas or insurance in a month. Plus it gets me healthier (no need to pay a gym) and reduces traffic.
If I were greenpeace, I would reduce the radicalness and encourage people to make PERSONAL choices that help the environment. Not pointless gestures. As long as there is demand for oil, there will be supply.
So reduce the demand.

Since when has Greenpeace been known for "explaining" their point of view. I am actually surprised that this doesn't happen more often. I agree with a lot of what they stand for, but rarely agree with their methods. Thats probably why a French special forces team sunk one of their boats (One of the funniest things the French have ever done)!

I was on when this happened (but not at the scene) I can vouch for the protestors, they were very nice and polite, even when arrested (must be because they are so regular).

Still you have to laugh, espeacially at greenpeace.

There's a few politics stories that have been queued for a few days. Probably not the fault of the writer.

a photographer died when he went back into the ship (for equipment, I think). I don't think that's funny, but do I think it typical Frenchie asshole behavior, as for greenpeace getting a ass whuppin, I think that's funny, and what do you expect? it's alway possible extreme action will get an equally extreme reaction from the people they are protesting, I'm surprised this doesn't happen more. there are better ways to get a message across.

I can't wait to see how many more "Tough guys" come out to play on this thread.

w00t!

Talking shit on the threads, the poor man's H2.

If you like the idea of Greenpeace, but think they are a bloated and bullshit organization--try these guys. Less talk, more Rawk.

and they have cool t-shirts

So, again, w00t!

I hear the guys that put spikes in baby harp seal brains are tough as shit too (you probably get a lot of hard fuckin' guys that could care less about anything but money in their pockets in these trades--I'm just sayin'). And that guy that fucked up and dumped oil all over south Alaska--fuck he was a drunk, tough as shit, oil guy too!

w00t.

yeah that's a great piece of advice. Especially when other people's irresponsible use of that product, and the product manufacturers themselves are posing a direct threat to your own welfare and everything you personally hold dear.
That's like saying "If you oppose Nuclear weapons, just stop using them"

Individuals making 'quiet dignified personal protests' as their only political act won't change a thing. If the greenpeace activists just decided to grow their own vegetables and ride a bicycle, if they somehow managed to totally eliminate all petrochemicals from their daily lives then as far as the oil companies are converned they are irrelevant, they might as well have committed suicide, and the Oil companies don't have an active anti-suicide campaign. Their propaganda and their access to government speaks far far louder than a few people who choose to live a low impact lifestyle.

Btw, I'm sure most greenpeace activists own and maintain bicycles, take public transport and eat organic food. They just believe that such individual actions are not enough, and they are correct.
