U.S. Justice Dept supoenas Planned Parenthood records

From Reuters:

The U.S. Justice Department has subpoenaed Planned Parenthood for the confidential medical records of hundreds of women as part of its defense against challenges to a federal law that bans a type of late-term abortion, the family planning organization said on Thursday.

Attorney General John Ashcroft said this month the records were needed to find out whether the procedure, called "partial birth abortion" by its critics, was medically necessary.

"We believe that this is a sweeping invasion of medical privacy. Ashcroft has subpoenaed hundreds of confidential medical records and we're taking every step within the law to resist this," said Elizabeth Toledo, a spokeswoman for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

[Ashcroft] said the department agreed to take "every precaution possible" and to "mask much of the identifying characteristics of the patients" and "to expunge the identifying names."

I guess we'll just have to trust him on that...

of course they can. you're a feminist if you think that women should be able to enjoy the same treatment and privileges as men, such as voting, driving, and leaving the house after dark. if you think that women are property, or need to be "protected" for "their own good" then you're probably not a feminist.

I'm reminded of an Onion piece of Point/Counterpoint they did with some random woman arguing about "You can't invade my uterus" counterpointed by some General of the Army guy arguing "We must invade such and such's uterus now" and went into detail about troop deployments and such.

I really wish I had time to search the Onion for it.

Yeah, I know. Idle question, it was. I fully support the tenets of feminism, but I'm not sure I'd be so bold as to call myself one.

Does anyone know if John Ashcroft realizes that the term "partial-birth abortion" is not actual medical terminology, but is in fact a political term invented to try and stigmatize abortions? Because if he realizes that he must know that no patient's chart will ever say it on there.

Well, what do you expect from someone whose reaction to being appointed Attorney General was to have his father anoint his head in oil?

See, here's where I get a squirmy, uncomfortable feeling.

Being a white guy, I get put on the defensive when someone calls me a sexist by default. Why is it any more offensive to be told what to do with your body by a white male than by any other person? If it isn't, why bring it up?

Now to be clear, I'm anti-asscroft, pro-choice, and voted for Nader last time around.

But why go after a category of person that is incidental to the viewpoint? The fact that white guys are in power doesn't mean that all white guys are the problem, does it?
