FCC Chairman Powell Resigns

FRIDAY JANUARY 21 2005 2:32 PM

Submitted by NoFi. Edited By Michael_J_Totten.

Controversial FCC chairman Michael Powell handed in his resignation today.

In his statement on leaving the comission Powell said "Having completed a bold and agressive agenda, it is time for me to pursue other opportunities and let someone else take the reigns of the agency." He goes on to add: "The seeds of our policies are taking firm root in the marketplace and are starting to blossom. The use of cell phones, digital televisions, personal video recorders, and digital music players, is exploding. These devices are increasingly connected anytime, anywhere by a wide variety of broadband networks enabling a host of competitive services and new apllications. Our children will inherit this exciting future."

Whether you loved him or hated him, he made a lot of changes that will surely be felt for years to come.

I've heard a bit on the radio today about how he was behind quite a few good things besides titgate - the national Do Not Call list, for example. Someone even made the argument that by handing out so many fines he prevented more serious intrusions by the government into broadcasting.

But I'm just relaying. Is there anyone who can offer more than a pissy one-issue description of his career, or do I have to do the research myself?

Geuss what, if we look at all of the people that have "left the Bush administration" and we see who Bush ahs replaced them with and he's gone in one direction: Find someone worse! so guess what, expect a religious zealot to take over and attempt manadatory broadcast of religious programing.

/slight exaggeration

Somehow I can see Zell Miller filling this position while still hangin' with Fox News. His first action, to formally challenge Chris Mathews to a duel.

We can only hope that Chris has a quick trigger finger.

We'll meet at dawn where I will strike you down with my confederate sabre biggrin
