FCC Chairman Powell Resigns

Controversial FCC chairman Michael Powell handed in his resignation today.

In his statement on leaving the comission Powell said "Having completed a bold and agressive agenda, it is time for me to pursue other opportunities and let someone else take the reigns of the agency." He goes on to add: "The seeds of our policies are taking firm root in the marketplace and are starting to blossom. The use of cell phones, digital televisions, personal video recorders, and digital music players, is exploding. These devices are increasingly connected anytime, anywhere by a wide variety of broadband networks enabling a host of competitive services and new apllications. Our children will inherit this exciting future."

Whether you loved him or hated him, he made a lot of changes that will surely be felt for years to come.

Sadly, I'm sure Bush isn't going to replace him with someone that isn't just as big if not more of a piece of shit. And the other brown lining of this news is that he's rumored to be leaving so that he can gear up to run for governor of VA.

Geuss what, if we look at all of the people that have "left the Bush administration" and we see who Bush ahs replaced them with and he's gone in one direction: Find someone worse! so guess what, expect a religious zealot to take over and attempt manadatory broadcast of religious programing.

Somehow I can see Zell Miller filling this position while still hangin' with Fox News. His first action, to formally challenge Chris Mathews to a duel.

We can only hope that Chris has a quick trigger finger.

Sadly, this is an area where neither side has a very good track record. Worse than Powell's recent boob-fueled finings was his relaxing of the ownership regulations in radio. He is directly responsible for the Clear Channels and Infinities making all radio sound the same.

On the other hand, the Democrats are responsible for all those crap ratings systems. Mr. and Mrs. Al Gore and the lovely Parents Music Resource Council got us stickers on CDs, and Sen. Joe Lieberman has long been an advocate of stricter movie ratings and video game censoring.

Whoever steps in to the helm of the FCC, it's likely going to suck, either in the same way, but worse, or in a whole new awful manner.

Yeah and geuss who nominated Powell to the FCC board (he bacame chairman under Bush) in the first place? CLINTON!! Sadly Clinton screwed up in this area big time. Prescription ads on TV and the first expansion of ownership, happened under his watch.

I've become a huge fan of the Countdown w/ Keith Olberman on msnbc and they showed the entire "controversial" video. Holy shit you can tell that "dr" Dobbs never watched it!!! 1st. SpongeBob is in it for like 5 seconds, and 2nd there is no mention of sexuality at all! They just preach tolerance and understand, just like Jesus did!
