Right Moves to Ban Gay Culture

On Thursday the Guardian reported that state rep. of Alabama, Gerald Allen, met with president Bush to discuss an initiative that would ban the use of state funds for pro-homosexual theatre and literature. When asked what lead to mobilization of this movement Allen came eerily close to actually using the term 'culture war' when he said:

"Traditional family values are under attack," Allen informs me. They've been under attack "for the last 40 years". The enemy, this time, is not al-Qaida. The axis of evil is "Hollywood, the music industry". We have an obligation to "save society from moral destruction". We have to prevent liberal librarians and trendy teachers from "re-engineering society's fabric in the minds of our children".

How far will this policy extend? Well, apparently Shakespeare is within its scope, as the Alabamian suggests that plays such as 'As You Like It', and the scene of male on male courtship therein should "tone it down". As for the more prominent examples of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof or The Color Purple? "Dig a hole," says Allen, "and dump them in it."

The thing is, he's absolutely right. There is a culture war going on, and the fundies are losing. And they will lose. Just as they lost with civil rights and women's liberation. And those who currently oppose gay rights and the culture war that's part of it will be recognized in the historical record as the intolerant bigoted assholes that they are.

Justice Scalia used the term "kulturkampf" in a decision - pretty sure it was Planned Parenthood vs. Casey, an abortion case in which the conservative judges considered putting Roe vs. Wade aside.

It's pretty clear they're losing if you've been paying attention to the progression of American culture over the past 15 years or so. Gays have much much more acceptence now than they did 15 years ago, there's no question - and most of that has gone hand in hand with their representation (although not always good) on network TV, Hollywood films, etc. If there's a groundswell of anti-gay sentiment (as I think there is) in the US it's the last gasps of a dying breed. They will lose, I assure you.

They are loosing, but it is in a "true" majority way, not a "voting" majority way.

Anyway this kind of stuff reminds me of princess Lea (sp) in Episode 4:

My attitude is go ahead ASSHOLE! Start burning books, see what happens. I know for a fact that once lit and theatre are under attack their little regime of hate will start to look like what it really is.
