Rape, a Solid First Step Towards Marriage

Oh, those hilarious Muslims and their wacky honor/shame culture. See, to regain her honor after being the victim of a rape, Sabina Khatoon has to marry the man who kidnapped her and brutally raped her. And she's really happy about the whole thing, because, hey, at least she's married, and who else is going to marry an unclean rape victim?

On the order of the court in Berhampur, Ahammad Shaikh, 30, tied the knot with Sabina Khatoon, 18, inside the local prison where he is serving his sentence.

Shaikh kidnapped Khatoon - the daughter of a daily wage labourer - from her village and raped her in a nearby forest in March this year.

After her father complained of the rape to the police in June, Shaikh was arrested. In the court he admitted having raped the teenager and was sent to prison for the deed...

Khatoon, who looked very happy after the marriage, said: "For that act [of rape] I hated him. Sometimes I felt like I wanted to tear him to pieces.

"But I have a different feeling for him now. I have forgiven him because he has chosen me as his wife. I have to love him now."

Ummm, the girl's community is Muslim. India, and Calcutta, and their courts are decidedly not. Abhorrent as this is, it 'aint a religious issue, its a cultural one.

Actually, in predominently muslim areas of india, the local courts, staffed by muslims, often rule based on sharia, as was the case in this instance.

My bad for assuming that a muslim spoke Arabic.
