New Jersey Governor McGreevey Resigns

New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey, who has caught hell in the past for various state blunders, announced today that he is resigning because of a homosexual extramarrital affair.

His wife was by his side as he revealed his sexual preference and said that his gay relationship violated his marriage vows.

The now openly gay governor said that to stay in office after revealing today’s bombshell (be it his coming out or his extra-material affair) would only incite rumors and create an atmosphere of distrust. So he will resign Nov 15th, well after the next Presidential election.

Thanks to Cash for the link.

I won't bother reposting his entire comment string, but Cash you're brilliant. And it's times like this that I'm glad I don't live in Jersey anymore and have a totally normal gov.... oh, whoops.

Our governor is just embarrassing... which beats the hell out of corrupt.

Damn you beat me to it...this is also linked to a possible sexual harrassment lawsuit. If he resigned now I think there would be an election fopr Gov...that's why he picked Nov.

Yeah I was going to add that but I didn't know enough so I left it out... bad reporting on my part I guess.

And what's wrong about fighting WWII? Things seemed to work out there. Wow, a Democrat leads us into war and doesn't catch flak? My how times have changed.

It's a shitty world we live in. War cleans everything up.

We're fighting a demon bigger than Hitler now.

Back to talk about McGreevey.

Makin' those assumptions again, eh? How you can assume that I think there was something "wrong" about fighting WWII, I can't be quite sure of. And there you go again with Republican/Democrat bullshit.

And a "shitty world"? A bit negative, aren't we? Minus the assholes, I think the world is pretty damn awesome.

I'll stick with Formula 409. War dosen't clean up shit. War is messy. Our current "clean-up crew" is coming home in body bags. Well, I guess some people get a hard on from all that macho nonsense.

Something as abstract as a "war on terror" sounds more like a boogie man to me, than a "demon". The 3rd Reich, Stalin, Idi Amin, Vlad the Impaler, Colonel Sanders, Leona Helmsley, and uh... what' his name again?... oh, yeah... OSAMA BIN LADEN! (you know, the guy we can't find?), maybe they're worthy of being called demons. But, shit, if we're gonna start fighting wars, I think we need to have some real, solid targets and threats. How come we're not fucking w/ Saudi Arabia? Isn't that where all the 9/11 douchebags actually came from? Next you'll assume that I'm a pacifist, and I wanna hug trees. ARRR!!!

So, 24 hours later the local NYC news sources--on all fronts--are reporting who the "lover" was. And they are constantly harping on the fact he's Israeli! The New York Post--of all places--has pictures of the guy with his skull-cap/yalmulke on! Good lord if this is not mixed up badly enough!

Like Rodney King said: "Why can’t we all just get along?"

I think this is the first major news story I've first learned about through SG.

It's still a fairly hot angle to the story...the guy allegedly has a sexual harrassment suit against the governor...he has received several jobs directly from the governor...right now he's not going to get much privacy.

I read he doesn't officaily retire until November where does that leave him for three months? can he really be trusted after he misused his position?

If he retired as of now, there would an election for his position in November. If he stays in until November, the people of NJ don't get a chance to elect his successor.

This AP article annoyed me a bit.

Mainly this part:
Under the state Constitution, McGreevey could only be removed from office through impeachment, a scenario that remains unlikely because it requires a two-thirds vote in the Assembly and trial in the Senate. Democrats control both houses of the Legislature.

NJ Governors can't be impeached. NJ Doesn't have an impeachment process. Governors in NJ can only be recalled. I would think an AP article would have halfway decent research & fact-checking.
