US Presidential Election to Have International Observers

The State Department has invited international observers to monitor the presidential election this November. The observers will come from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.

After the 2000 election, when tens of thousands of black voters were barred from the polls, several members of the House of Representatives asked the UN to bring in observers to help prevent a repeat, and to ensure fair and transparent elections.

The UN had declined the request, saying that only the presidential administration can apply for observers, but Colin Powell stepped in and invited OSCE.

This will be the first time a US presidential election has ever taken place under international observation.

Good. After Bush wins (again) people will have nothing to bitch about.

If Bush "wins" again, I'll have plenty to bitch about, I assure you.

yeah, hold your breath for this to make a difference. go on, do it. for house democrats this is purely partisan horseshit, if the 2000 election disenfranchised thousands of midwestern relgious right voters throwing the elction to gore, conservatives would be the ones on all the talk shows whining and bitching about how the election was stolen.

Well, yeah. That’s how the house of representatives works. If liberal voters are disenfranchised their representatives are on the case. If conservatives are getting shit, their conservative electrets help them out. That’s kind of their job. Kind of by definition.

Were you making a point?

Why? Why be mad?

I didnt vote for Clinton in 1992 and I never bitched about him. I even voted for him in 1996.

I'll be bitching that we have a president who neglected capturing the man responsible for the greatest attack ever on American soil,

Clinton?

Unfortunately this is a token gesture at best. In a nation the size of the United States tens of thousands of observers would be necesary to monitor the type of shit that happened in 2000. The Dems have assembled thousands of lawers and volunteers to do their own bit of monitoring on election day with the intention of seeking immediate legal relief as well as documenting the ongoing problems of disenfranchisement in the US in the hope of preventing a repeat of 2004.
Good luck to them, but don't be surprised if we see some wierd shit come elecion day regardless of monitoring.

Well, just a note, but election monitoring is always a token gesture. In general, the monitors try to spread out and see what there is to see. They're looking for fraud, corruption, and intimidation at the polls. There just aren't enough people (in any country) to canvas it 100%.

yeah, amazingly enough i was. see there is a small amount of difference between it being the general belief among a majority of bipartisan members in the house and senate, not to mention the population. that's not the case, this is a handful of party line assholes just trying to make headlines that make the president look bad in an election year. from my perspective bush needs little to no help whatsoever looking bad, but this makes dems look as bad or worse. this almost looks like they're sore losers and bullies, all at once. "oh yeah! we'll get our big brother- the UN- to watch you!"
