US Presidential Election to Have International Observers

The State Department has invited international observers to monitor the presidential election this November. The observers will come from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights.

After the 2000 election, when tens of thousands of black voters were barred from the polls, several members of the House of Representatives asked the UN to bring in observers to help prevent a repeat, and to ensure fair and transparent elections.

The UN had declined the request, saying that only the presidential administration can apply for observers, but Colin Powell stepped in and invited OSCE.

This will be the first time a US presidential election has ever taken place under international observation.

What will happen if the international observers decide that Bush is stealing the election again?

Unfortunately this is a token gesture at best. In a nation the size of the United States tens of thousands of observers would be necesary to monitor the type of shit that happened in 2000. The Dems have assembled thousands of lawers and volunteers to do their own bit of monitoring on election day with the intention of seeking immediate legal relief as well as documenting the ongoing problems of disenfranchisement in the US in the hope of preventing a repeat of 2004.
Good luck to them, but don't be surprised if we see some wierd shit come elecion day regardless of monitoring.

yeah, hold your breath for this to make a difference. go on, do it. for house democrats this is purely partisan horseshit, if the 2000 election disenfranchised thousands of midwestern relgious right voters throwing the elction to gore, conservatives would be the ones on all the talk shows whining and bitching about how the election was stolen.

and as boziboard mentioned, this country is just too big to have enough observers. what i want to know is if the dems' laywers will file legal briefs even if the election is entirely above board. but i can't imagine it actually being above board since there's already been talk of suspending the elections in the event of terrorist attacks, followed quite closely by terrorist attack warning. hmm. yeah, i'm the one who's crazy, sure.

This would probably be a great idea but, sounds like they just gave Bush another reason to call "High Alert" on terrorism so he can delay the election. We as a people should have never let Bush steal the election in the first place. After the shit in Florida the votes should have been negated and another election held with these monitors in place then.
Remember our Constitution is a wonderful gift, but let's not forget the Declaration of Independence which states it is not only our right, but our duty to replace a corrupt Goverment.

No, I'll still bitch that we have the first born-again Christian president in American history, one who believes he talks to God, one who would rather look to Jesus for advice than his own father.
I'll be bitching that we have a president who neglected capturing the man responsible for the greatest attack ever on American soil, while devoting our military power to a poorly planned war.
I'll be bitching that we have reelected a man who, in a time when the world is more connected and smaller than ever, chose to disregard the advice of our oldest allies.

I'll be bitching a lot. Sue me.
