Kerry Boosts Record War Chest to $180M

TUESDAY JULY 6 2004 11:30 AM

Submitted by Dr_Zoidberg. Edited By legionnaire.

John Kerry, Democratic front runner for the 2004 Presidential Election, has broken the record for the most amount of Presidential Cantidate campaign funds, raising $180 million for his campaign.

He has about a month of fund raising left before he receives about $75 million in taxpayer funding for the general-election campaign, which starts July 29 when he is nominated at the Democratic convention in Boston. That's the only money Kerry will be allowed to spend campaigning until the Nov. 2 election.

While this total is very impressive, President Bush is predicted to raise $250 million, surpassing the previous election's total of $105 million.

Bush has about a month longer than Kerry to raise and spend private campaign donations. He also is expected to accept government funding for the general campaign and will receive his check after he is nominated in New York in early September.

With these record setting totals, this is sure to be a great election, not like the fiasco that happened in the 2000 election.

My question is, who are all of these people they are trying to convince? It would seem that the "swing voter" demographic has shrunk significantly since the last election.

Such a waste of taxpayer money to give to these guys so they can insult each other in TV commercials.

Yeah, I think the "my vote doesn't count so what does it matter who I vote for?" mentality went away after the last election, and people are realizing that this is not the election to be throwing your vote away on a whim.

can we even pretend we have a democracy anymore? this is a fucking joke, two-hundred and fifty million dollars going to issue ads and negative campaigning. Bush has shown us what he believes and where he stands, he doesn't need hundreds of millions to muddy the issues by telling people he believes in education when he has something like "no child left behind" to show us exactly where he stands. as for kerry... well half his ideas seem to be one-liners and empty promises, pipe dreams like a seven dollar an hour minimum wage.

this kind of money and these kind of campaigns serve only to muddy the issues and effectifly turn any attempt at public debate into thirty-second soundbite spots, usually consisting of blurry footage of a canidate saying something stupid ten or twenty or thirty years ago. we should be elevating the the public debate, making it about issues, about actual debate instead of kerry calling bush a draft-dodger and bush accusing him of not deserving medals from a war that happened twenty years before some of the electorate was even born.

You know, I thought so too... And then I went into a sociology class in June where the professor got up and started talking about what a waste voting was because individual votes don't matter... whatever

That mentality is alive and well. So... please, please, please VOTE! Vote Democrat, Republican, Green, Whig, I don't care, but please VOTE! biggrin

edited to fix my horrible spelling...

You know the reason behind public funding for campaigns is to allow people without means to still run for office. Not saying it works out that way, but that is the idea. How about having public funding only, but capping what can be spent on a campaign? Say no candidate can spend over $75 mil. But I admit it would be hard to control private supporters from spending to promote their candidate... So maybe it's not that great of an idea after all. ;-)
