Sweet GOP Self-Destruction

I was very sad to see Obama pass on my gay pick for the Supreme Court. I really wanted the Republicans to be forced to show their colors as they made homosexuality the main issue to keep someone off the bench. It didn’t happen. Fortunately, Obama went with a pick that is so politically shrewd it is astounding: Judge Sonia Sotomayor. Turns out she’s not white. After the dust settles, the Democrats will have created a majority for many, many, many years. Why? Because Republicans can’t stop their racist nonsense from spewing forth out of their loud holes. By the time this nomination process is over, America’s Hispanic population will be done with the Republicans for a long, long time.

Immediately after the pick, the idiots went on the offensive. Rush Limbaugh, who is a shocking racist, declared Judge Sonia Sotomayor a racist. Rush is one of the leaders of the Republican Party and he is losing his shit over the Sotomayor pick.

"She brings a form of bigotry or racism to the court," Limbaugh said, later adding: "How can a president nominate such a candidate? And how can a party get behind such a candidate? That's what would be asked if somebody were foolish enough to nominate David Duke or pick somebody even less offensive."

Right. Racism should remain where it belongs – on AM radio. Next Newt Gingrich also joined the asshole party. He’s made statements to the press and has Twittered about Sotomayor.

"Imagine a judicial nominee said 'my experience as a white man makes me better than a Latina woman' new racism is no better than old racism."

Oooooo. This southern white racist seems to be upset with the Latina. And he follows it through to its natural conclusion.

White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw.

Wow, what a weird thing to Tweet during a trip to Auschwitz. But, hey, stay focused and all that. Don’t feel weird Twittering about a Latina woman being racist while you are at the hellmouth of hatred, super white guy.

Naturally, Newt followed up with with an email to his minions that explained how Sotomayor nomination is “un-American.” Totally. That’s why George H. Bush nominated her to the bench. Of course, the racism charge stems from a quote taken out of context. Here’s the deeply offensive statement.

"I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

Oh no! She’s worse than the Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan! What will white men do?!?! If you really want to know how the right wing is spinning this, take a look at the entire speech. Not at all what they are spinning it into.

But let’s take that quote out of context and accept it. How’d this guy make it on the bench?

Alito: When I get a case about discrimination, I have to think about people in my own family who suffered discrimination because of their ethnic background or because of religion or because of gender. And I do take that into account.

What the fuck?!?! Racist son of a bitch! How dare he use his life to contaminate his views. How’s he on the bench?!?!

While most, but not all, of the Republican lawmakers in Congress are saying this nomination should not have anything to do with race, they are letting the attack dogs run wild. Tom Tancredo is running around freaking about Sotomayor being a member of La Raza, which he says is a Latino KKK. He mostly says that because he is retarded.

Um, yeah. Remember all those lynchings of white people La Raza pulled off in the west? Man, those were some dark days. And in the '50s, you couldn’t go a week without hearing a story about a group of Latinos dragging a white man behind a truck by a chain.

Tancredo – and my father – believe La Raza means “The Race.” It does not.

Many people incorrectly translate our name, “La Raza,” as “the race.” While it is true that one meaning of “raza” in Spanish is indeed “race,” in Spanish, as in English and any other language, words can and do have multiple meanings. As noted in several online dictionaries, “La Raza” means “the people” or “the community.” Translating our name as “the race” is not only inaccurate, it is factually incorrect. “Hispanic” is an ethnicity, not a race. As anyone who has ever met a Dominican American, Mexican American, or Spanish American can attest, Hispanics can be and are members of any and all races.

The term “La Raza” has its origins in early 20th century Latin American literature and translates into English most closely as “the people” or, according to some scholars, as “the Hispanic people of the New World.”

While I know they are completely incorrect and their attacks are insane, I’d like them to continue. And I’d like them to go on every news channel, radio station and talk show in America. Scream that message loud and often, idiots, because you are doing even more damage to your already unpopular party. If it continues at this pace, the damage will be permanent. By the time this is over, Latinos will flock to the Democratic Party in dramatic numbers.

Mitchell: Do you disagree with anything Rush Limbaugh said?

Buchanan: Yeah, I do agree, I don't agree with some of the terms, but I do agree Sonia Sotomayor [he pronounces her name wrong, probably on purpose] does believe in race-based justice basically at the expense of white males and to advance people of color. The truth is that's what Barack Obama believes as well.

They need to keep this up. It looks like nothing other than angry privileged white men attacking a woman because of her race. And the news networks will eat it up and continue putting these morons on the television because it’s conflict and conflict means ratings.

Oh, and there’s an added bonus. Republican on Republican violence. Not all conservatives are pleased about the attacks on Sotomayor. They can see them for what they are: The death of the Republican Party, which may not be able to resurrect itself from this for years.

Some, and they are idiots, look at Judge Sotomayor and say: attack, attack, kill. A conservative activist told the New York Times, "We need to brand her." Another told me a fight is needed to excite the base.

Excite the base? How about excite a moderate, or interest an independent? How about gain the attention of people who aren't already on your side?

That’s not how your side came into power. You guys rode the back of fear and hideous attacks. Your peeps are doing what they have always done. They literally know no other way. You’re just pack animals who have tasted blood and won’t stop until you’re put down.

I mean, look at this shit.

LIDDY: I understand that they found out today that Miss Sotomayor is a member of La Raza, which means in illegal alien, “the race.”

This dude has his own radio show.

LIDDY: Let’s hope that the key conferences aren’t when she’s menstruating or something, or just before she’s going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then.

Please. Keep. Going.

LIDDY: And everybody is cheering because Hispanics and females have been, quote, underrepresented, unquote. And as you pointed out, which I thought was quite insightful, the Supreme Court is not designed to be and should not be a representative body.

So, it should be all white men.

Sit back, pray for more racist nonsense and enjoy the show. It’s the end of any hope the Republican Party ever had at regaining control of Congress.

In case anyone missed it, Subrosa recently posted a link discussing Sotomayor's actual judicial record.

Frankly, I don't share your optimism. By your own admission, they've ALWAYS been fear-mongering, racist douchebags...and yet even the very worst of them are still around.

What I'm saying is that if they haven't been rightfully driven out by this point, then they probably never will be.

Yeah, you can count on ol' Rush continuing his tirades and getting paid millions of dollars to do so right up until he has a heart attack and dies sitting on his big fat ass.

Right, because making and upholding laws for a country that affect every citizen, should be done by a cross section of our nation. surreal

This irony part is off the chain! It's an embarrassment of irony riches!

The White, Christian, male power structure is in jeopardy...

-Splotchy White male, Bill O'Reilly.

Somewhere he's in a room jumping up and down, red-faced, screaming, "I told you! See, I told you!"

I hope Sotomayor gets the job. Here are some thoughts:

1. Politics is a game. Both sides attack the other in inaccurate and sometimes outrageous ways. While it is necessary to point this out when it happens, It is good to remember that this is a game, for both left and right. Your angry attacks make me sad.

2. Anybody who thinks that Latinos as a group are not racist has not spent much time with many of them. I am married to a Latina from Nicaragua for four years, and have spent 15 years of my life working with large numbers of Latinos in the service industry. I speak fluent Spanish and lived in Central America for eight months. The PC standards that prevail here re speech are much weaker among Latinos as a group. I could not begin to count the times I have heard many, many Latinos refer to black people as 'chimpanzees.' Depending to some extent on what country you are in, 'gringo' can also be an epithet. This in no way means that Sotomayor is racist herself. Incidentally, la raza does basically mean 'the Hispanic people of the New World.' It is not used, as far as I have seen, to refer to 'the people' or 'the community'. That word is 'pueblo'.

3. Racism is something which exists as a tendency, probably a permanent tendency, among most people, if not all. (Reverse racism is one permutation of racism.) It is something that America has dedicated itself to fight against, as an experiment, to see if we can not create a higher good. I do not believe that white people, or Republicans for that matter, are more racist than any other group, and in significant ways we have made real changes and progress in this American quest for something better.

4. Certainly it is acceptable to charge white people with racism. Is it a sin to even consider that people of other races might be racist? Is this a double standard?

Again, hope she makes it.

What are the facts?
Is she a member of La Raza and supports carving up the USA?

I'm all for shaking up the good ole boy network.

But I can't support her if she shares La Raza views.

I keep watching the collapse of the Republican Party in much the same way as I would a cr wreck; its horrible, but its nearly impossible to look away. I have never in my life, and I'm positive that most Americans would agree with this, seen a political party utterly collapse in such a horrendous fashion before. If this keeps up, the Republicans may soon be joining the Whigs and Federalists in the political grave yard.
What worries me, on a deeper level, however, is the type of language being used to 'excite' the base. Sadly, with the recent assassinatiion of an abortionists in Kansas, we're once again getting sad proof that language such as the type that Tancredo, Liddy and others are using can bare some very bitter fruit. Although they are trapping themselves into a corner with their racists diatribes, there are those out there upon who such language is not only effective, but it is down right dangerous. The last thing we need are those types becoming incensed and deciding to act out on their rage.

I'm actually curious as to what you consider La Raza's "views" to be. Taking a look at the NCLR (National Council of La Raza) website, and giving it a glance over, albeit, a cursory one, and all I've really seen is where they're a non-profit, non-partisan organization that advocates equal rights and opportunities for Hispanic-Americans.

About La Raza:

The National Council of La Raza (NCLR) – the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States – works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans. Through its network of nearly 300 affiliated community-based organizations (CBOs), NCLR reaches millions of Hispanics each year in 41 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. To achieve its mission, NCLR conducts applied research, policy analysis, and advocacy, providing a Latino perspective in five key areas – assets/investments, civil rights/immigration, education, employment and economic status, and health. In addition, it provides capacity-building assistance to its Affiliates who work at the state and local level to advance opportunities for individuals and families.

Founded in 1968, NCLR is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan, tax-exempt organization headquartered in Washington, DC. NCLR serves all Hispanic subgroups in all regions of the country and has operations in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, Sacramento, San Antonio, and San Juan, Puerto Rico.

As I stated, I haven't given the site more than a glance over, but I'm not seeing anything inherently terrible about their views. I'm sure any one of us could find something to nitpick or debate over in their views, but on the whole, I don't see anything to get worked up over.

NCLR seems no more racist than the NAACP. Of course there are some who bleat about them being akin to the Klan too.

Thank you. I wanted to compare them as an Hispanic version of the NAACP, but to be honest, I don't know enough about them (La Raza) to make such a claim without risking looking like a complete toolbag. biggrin
