In an attempt to defeat the evil empire in the 2004 election, Michael Moore went out on the road to rally the unrousable, recruiting an army of rookie activists from the nation’s under-tapped slacker population. Offering incentives such as free Ramen Noodles and college scholarships, Moore hoped that legions of dedicated college layabouts would rise up and vote the right (well left) way.

Well, we all know how well that turned out. Let’s hope Moore has more luck come November 2008.

To this end, the Sicko filmmaker is making his latest film, which documents his 2004 Slacker Uprising campaign, available as a free download for three weeks starting September 23. The flick features overachieving (or are they failed?) slackers R.E.M., Tom Morello, Eddie Vedder and Roseanne.

Michael Moore's kind of an idiot.

Calling Gustav "proof that there's a God in Heaven" as a joke... it's pretty fucked up to say a joke like that while people are legitimately afraid for their lives and homes.

He distorts facts almost as much as the GOP, all he does is bring his own group down to their level.

Bowling For Columbine is pretty powerful. It features one of the best Marilyn Manson interviews ever. I love this exchange from it:

Michael Moore: If you were to talk directly to the kids at Columbine or the people in that community, what would you say to them if they were here right now?

Marilyn Manson: I wouldn't say a single word to them, I would listen to what they have to say and that's what no one did.

See that's what's wrong with the left, it's all about a free lunch. It's like the old "give a man a fish/teach a man to fish" adage. Rather than passing out ramen he should have taught them how to put food on their own tables themselves. Like maybe a symposium on how to get food stamps or something.

Ok, who threw the shoe at my head?

And then contact the mental hospital. One of them was a hate-filled psychopath. That's what I hate the most about that movie: Moore starts out ridiculing the idea that stuff social conservatives don't like about American society were responsible for the Columbine massacre, but what is the entire movie? Basically a laundry list of things Michael Moore doesn't like about American society and how it's just as reasonable to blame, say, missile and bomb manufacturing and war for Columbine as video games and extreme music.

It's just an incoherent self-contradictory premise, and it's more about airing what Moore hates about America to the audience than the actual cause of Columbine. He never once blames the people responsible, Klebold and Harris. Instead he postures and grandstands self-righteously in front of Charleton Heston as if he's to blame. He makes me sick.

When he's not being too much of a dick, Moore can be entertaining. Roger and Me was a good film, Canadian Bacon had its moments (mostly because of John Candy), but unfortunately the rest of his films (and yes, I've watched them all with the exception of Sicko) has Moore doing his "I can be a bigger douche than you" game.

It was stockula. Everyone knows that we on the left only wear sandals. They go well with our flower covered heads and dreadlocks.

Hey, Birkenstocks are so much more than mere sandals.

On a more on topic note, I'm not wild about the title. "Slacker" is chock full of negative connotation, and I don't think it's wise to try to get a group of people energized by insulting them.

The problem is this: Every one has a side, and as such every one refuses to see any good in the opposing side. Moore isn't quite as obnoxious as he gets painted, but he certainly isn't some sort of uber-wit/mega-brain others paint him as.

The guy is a filmmaker. He's a guy with a camera and a personal belief. His job is to evoke a response, positive or negative, and he does just that. But he, too, belongs to a side so his work is often biased. As such, it suffers. And then pissing contests between the Right and the Left get a whole new stream dropping into the overflowing bucket of petty, wasteful bickering they both love so much.

I won't knock any one for liking or disliking Moore's work. But to think that either side has all of the answers on their own, well... Well, that's why this country is heading to some dark places.

Birkenstocks? Fashionista! Mine are hemp and were made in a commune in Oregon.

Seriously, I agree. I have been called a slacker for most of my life and I work really hard at it.

What good are free ramen noodles when they only cost 25 cents anyway? When I was in college free beer and Nutella would have gone a lot further towards getting me someplace.

Although I did actually vote in college without Michael Moore's help so I guess I wasn't his target demo.

I guess a sad fact is this: Some times, no matter what some might do to "get the vote out", if any opposing member has the resources to rig/cheat/buy the election, it all amounts to nothing. It has happened in other countries for decades, probably even longer. It just stands to reason it happens here, especially considering that many who run for President are either rich or connected.

Still, it doesn't keep me from voting. Gotta try, at least. I wish there'd be a candidate I had any faith in, though.
