Democrats Still Sucking Ass

THURSDAY JANUARY 24 2008 6:00 AM

TAGS: Democrats, Bush, Pelosi, House Judiciary Committee

Back in September, I wrote an article calling the Democrats out on their amazingly spineless Congress. Now, there are certainly a multitude of reasons to call Congressional Democrats weak. They manage to hold quite a few hearings on the criminal activity of the Bush administration, yet never actually do anything about it.

My previous article (brilliant) was specifically about the House Judiciary Committee investigation of the US Attorney scandal.

Back in early July, the House Judiciary Committee was investigating the US Attorney scandal. Bush’s ex-White House legal advisor, Harriet Miers, blew off a Congressional subpoena. She didn’t come and take the fifth. She didn’t come and claim she had executive privilege. She just decided not to show up because the president, her former employer, did not want her to. So, Harriet Miers BLEW IT OFF.

Chief of staff Josh Bolten refused to hand over White House documents to the House Judiciary Committee. He claimed executive privilege and told the Democrats to shove their oversight up their assholes.

A couple of weeks later, the House Judiciary Committee recommended criminal contempt charges against Miers and Bolten. Next, the entire House has to vote on whether or not to hold the two devils in contempt. If they did so, the case would be sent to the US Attorney in DC. But the Dems did not get around to the vote before they went on their summer recess in August. They said they'd get to it in September. Fair enough.

In September, when they returned from their recess, they decided to put it off again.

The Democratic leadership is unlikely to push for a full vote in the House until late September at the earliest. The reason, is that Democrats haven't yet "briefed lawmakers on what it would mean and how the controversy would play out, both legally and politically":

This is the point where I called the Democrats weak and said they should take action as soon as possible, because to do nothing would invite the Bush administration to do whatever they wanted. My reasoning being it was one of the most flagrant abuses of power yet and a lack of action on such an obviously illegal act would lead to more and worse abuses, like, uh, deleting emails. and destroying hard drives that contained back ups. I was, of course, challenged by some of you morons here on the boards.

1. You don't just file criminal charges against senior White House staff like you were ordering a happy meal.
2. Congress has been in fucking recess. There have been exactly eleven working days since the Committee sent their recommendation to the house.

And it didn’t stop there.

The simple fact of the matter is that you have no training experience or understanding of what you rant about. You read crap in the press and run your mouth.

Here in the real world, where being the online equivalent of a water cooler loudmouth isn't very impressive, the fact remains that there has not been remotely enough time to prepare a head-on run at the White House. You cant whip 435 representatives off in their home districts, and there's not a hell of a lot of point in trying when you've already unseated the architect of the scandal, which is what the leadership was spending their time on over the recess.

Anyway, that clown was so wrong it is amazing. That’s why he gets called out on the newswire. It’s a shame, and it’s petty, but I’m the fucking politics editor, which makes me some sort of demigod.

The Democrats are, quite simply, liars. They sold America on oversight and have done no such thing. In 2006, Nancy Pelosi made this bullshit declaration.

Pelosi was asked what was most important about regaining majority status. "Subpoena power," she said.

Just not in September. And, of course, in October they didn’t have time for it because they had to deal with appropriations. In November, it was the SCHIP. In December they went back on vacation. Now it’s January. And those poor overworked bastards still can’t get on top of it.

“Right now, we’re focused on working in a bipartisan fashion on [the] stimulus,” said House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer, indicating that the contempt vote is not expected for weeks, depending on how quickly the stimulus package moves.

Brendan Daly, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said, “no decision has been made” as to when a criminal contempt vote would be held by the House.

It’s not like it’s important or anything, so take your time. Two ex-employees of the White House refused to testify in a probe into the firing of US Attorneys. Firings that seem to be politically motivated, in an attempt to fraudulently prosecute and investigate Democrats during an election year. The firings allowed the Department of Justice to purge voting roles of minorities, which gives the Republicans a MASSIVE advantage in the 2008 presidential election. So, by all means, take your fucking time. Maybe you can get around to it in 2010, after Bush has moved to Paraguay.

Until Congress actually does something, or anything, about the Bush administration's flagrant law breaking, they will continue to whatever the fuck they want, whenever they want. And the Republicans will continue to steal elections. And one branch of government gets weaker and weaker. Congress has destroyed Congress for years to come.

Urrgh . . . queasy feeling in my stomach. The dems have been a huge disappointment, sort of the pinnacle of the pile of crap. The public can't seem to find out anything that is going on for two reasons: 1) television media do their best not to cover anything vital and 2) reading gives the vast majority of people a headache. Nobody wants to do the research into issues, so all elections become contests of charisma and popularity. We are so fucking fucked, and we did it to ourselves. Nobody forced us to bend over with our pants around our collective ankles.

Oh, damn. Ahh. . . You really did that, huh?

While I'd love nothing more for congress to have some guts and go after these serious violations of ethics and law, a good portion of the blame for this inertia can be put on the shoulders of many in the public who will buy the line that going after these issues are nothing more than partisan attacks.

Politicians are, by nature, popularity whores who want to keep their jobs. It's an unsavory and I fear inextricable truth to the game - a game that 'we' are complicit in.

They've done their 'market research, and they've found that too many people don't give a shit.

Agreed. This is the worst article I've ever read. It's no surprise that Fox is one of FTR's hopeful employers. It may not be their News branch, but what's the difference? I suppose you really want that foreclosed-on house really bad. Thank you for the link to your work, FTR.

I feel I need all I need to know.

Kindness and love, though more difficult to maintain than their counterparts, really do pay off in wonderful and immediate ways in addition to having incredible long-term benefits.

I never get involved on the boards here but this kind of thing could end and I doubt most of us would really miss it.
