Little Hitler Is Coming! Little Hitler Is Coming!

President Ahmadinejad is coming to the United States, which gives us the opportunity to see how much Americans just want to be scared. For the past few months, conservatives have been using the media to label Ahmadinejad as the new Hitler. Unfortunately, the evil cartoon character they are creating is actually a man and his visit to the US could undermine the neo-con propaganda machine. But it probably won't.

The neo-cons would very much like us to believe that Iran is Mordor and Ahmadinejad is Sauron. That way the White House’s impending attack on Iran will be justified. Some neo-cons are actually claiming we have been at war with Iran since 1979, which is weird because Reagan gave Iran weapons in the '80s and then used the money from the sales to fund the Contras. That would make Reagan a traitor. Weird logic conservatives, but do what you’ve got to do.

Now Columbia University has come under attack for inviting Ahmadinejad to speak.

"There is no excuse to invite this madman, this little Hitler," said New York assemblyman Dov Hikind. "This is immoral. This is outrageous. This is sick."

Oh, fuck yes. Is there a better way to show we are a free society than by stopping someone from speaking? Speaking WORDS. Oh, the horror. Ahmadinejad might say something like, “Israel should be wiped off the map." Because that is exactly what he said at an anti-Zionism conference in Tehran last October! Neo-cons screamed that Ahmadinejad was calling for genocide of Jews. If the President of Iran says such things, we cannot let them get their hands on nukes!

R. Nicholas Burns, the under secretary of state for political affairs said, "Given the radical nature of Iran under Ahmadinejad and its stated wish to wipe Israel off the map of the world, it is entirely unconvincing that we could or should live with a nuclear Iran."

One big problem with their claims is that Ahmadinejad never actually said those words.

Ahmadinejad did not say he was going to wipe Israel off the map because no such idiom exists in Persian," remarked Juan Cole, a Middle East specialist at the University of Michigan and critic of American policy who has argued that the Iranian president was misquoted. "He did say he hoped its regime, i.e., a Jewish-Zionist state occupying Jerusalem, would collapse."

Huh, isn’t that the same kind of thing George Bush and his neo-con pals said about Iraq before the war? That means Bush was calling for the extermination of all Iraqis! My God! Now Bush wants to kill everyone in North Korea and Syria. What a nightmare! And Reagan was calling for the death of all people living in the former Soviet Union! Under this logic we are genocide crazy.

Further proof that Ahmadinejad is a little Hitler who wants to exterminate all Jews can be found in Iran, where 20,000 Jews live and actually have a representative in Parliament. Clearly the man wants them dead.

Ahmadinejad is also a threat because he is a religious lunatic. The man actually believes his role is to pave the way for the coming of the Twelfth Imam. That is some fucked up shit and totally different from Bush, a born again Christian who thinks Jesus is coming back any second and for that to happen, Israel needs to be surrounded by enemies. Which one of those guys has thousands of nuclear weapons at his disposal?

During his visit, Ahmadinejad also wanted to visit ground zero and pay his respects, but we rejected his request. Turns out many New Yorkers and family members of 9/11 victims were upset at the idea of Ahmadinejad going to the location of the terrorist attack he had nothing to do with. Could you imagine how insulting that would be? When 9/11 happened, Iran expressed sympathy with the US and Iranians held spontaneous candlelight vigils. Iran is also an enemy of al-Qaeda and thought the attacks could open a dialogue with the US. What assholes! Take your respects and shove them up your ass!

Ahmadinejad thought he could use his visit to create some sort of understanding between our countries. He apparently didn’t comprehend our constant desire for a mythical boogeyman. The US loves a Hitler!

Not that he is the greatest guy in the world. Ahmadinejad is the president of an incredibly oppressive regime that funds Hezbollah and other groups who fight Israel. We in the US would never think of funding rebel armies to destabilize another country. That’s just fucking bullshit. And never mind that shit I wrote about the Contras a couple of paragraphs ago.

What most people don’t know is that Ahmadinejad actually has zero power over the Iranian military. Zero. So, he might be the ideal guy to attempt to start a dialogue with. Too bad well never know because he’s pure evil. And we are pure goodness.

Well put, FTR.

I do want to clarify one thing, though. While it's true that Ahmadinejad's actual words have been misrepresented, Hitler's own public statements on the Jews tended to be similarly hedged.

That said, it's also true that the hysteria in this country about Iran isn't helping anybody.

You mean "the libs" should rally behind an unpopular president who uses extremist faith-based rhetoric and faux-populism to try and cover up his near-complete ineptitude at actual governance?

Hey, it's working so well for the (neo-)cons, so why not?

Wonderful article. When I heard about them barring him from visiting "Ground Zero" I just about cried. I mean, I don't expect anything better from the people of this country anymore(present company excluded, of course), but the fact that the Bush regime has succeeded in duping everyone into thinking everyone in the Middle East "hates our freedom," is so discouraging. Thanks for pointing out the idiocy.

Look with a little luck all we need do is se how the next administration handles Iran. Perhaps we can even open up a dialog.

And it's not a conspiracy, why bother even trying to talk rationally when your just going to get berated by someone. Better to have fun with it and stir the pot since you know no matter what you say someone will be a douche just because of your beliefs. smile

Fortunately, there seems to be some rational thinking going on inside the military these days. CENTCOM Commander Admiral Fallon, who would be responsible for directing any military action in Iran, recently said:

"This constant drumbeat of conflict is what strikes me which is not helpful and not useful..."

"I expect that there will be no war and that is what we ought to be working for..."

"It is not a good idea to be in a state of war. We ought to try and to do our utmost to create different conditions."

Ok, well...
Ahmadinejad is obviously a fuck. Everyone knows this. Disguising his open anti-semitism as veiled anti-semitism is a pointless distinction (ohhhh he just said he wants the Jewish state to be destroyed... that's totally different surreal ). Iran's support of Hizbullah, among other terrorist groups, says more than Ahmadinejad would ever need to.
That being said, I don't really know why anyone would care that he speaks at Columbia, or visit ground zero. They're obviously just PR stunts. He's trying to get our goats, I think it's disappointing that people are taking the bait.

And, props to Columbia for understanding the difference between letting someone speak and endorsing his views. At least free speech lives at one Ivy.

well put, this is a supposed free country. why should we be afraid to let someone speak? is it so bad to hear both sides of a story and allow us to make up own minds about it. people need to stop letting someone else tell them what to think.

A statement released by the Columbia Dems supporting the event says basically this: what better way to exercise our rights as Americans and thinkers at a top university than openly confronting this guy and forcing him to justify his outlandish views in a place where he's not cushioned by an oppressive regime of censorship? people who disagree fundamentally with each other should debate about it, rather than demonize each other and go to war. They also hope that videos of it make it to the Iranian people.
