Republican Senator Taps His Gay Foot Near Cop!

In what may be the lamest sex scandal of all time, Senator Larry Craig of Idaho, was arrested in June by a Minneapolis airport cop for “disorderly conduct.” The undercover officer thought Craig was sending signals indicating he was looking for sex in an airport bathroom. Man on man sex. Craig pleaded guilty, paid a $575 fine and was put on probation for one year. The details of the arrest are amazingly retarded.

The bathroom is apparently known as a place where fellas go to have sex with other fellas. Airport police were conducting a sting and had made “numerous arrests” before they bagged the Senator. The police report is both pathetic and weird.

First the report says that Craig entered a stall next to the policeman and put his luggage against the door. The officer claimed that is what gay men do.

My experience has shown that individuals engaging in lewd conduct use their bags to block the view from the front of their stall.

Right! That is exactly what gay men do. Also, I do it because men usually pee on the floor around the toilet and I don’t want my luggage to smell like urine.

At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot, which was within my stall area.

Anyone else getting a boner at this point? This is some awesome literary porn.

Next Craig “swiped his hand beneath the stall divider several times.” That was enough for the law. The cop showed his ID. Craig was not pleased.

With my left hand near the floor, I pointed towards the exit. Craig responded, 'No!'

At the airport police station, Craig tried to explain the situation.

Craig…told police he has a "wide stance" in the bathroom and reached down to pick up a piece of paper from the floor.

Honest enough. When I shit I usually spread my legs at 90-degree angles, but I am also a lizard. Craig was released after 45 minutes and he went on his way. Poor guy must have thought he got away with it, until someone leaked it to Roll Call yesterday.

This is one of the creepiest arrests I have ever heard of. I know gays are targeted all the time with shit like this, but the details are disturbing. How tapping your foot would ever hold up in court as lewd behavior is beyond me. The purpose of stings like this one, are to scare men with public exposure and hope they take a guilty plea. Looks pretty effective.

Even more disturbing is a story in today’s Idaho Statesman detailing a five-month investigation into Craig’s alleged homosexuality. The paper interviewed over 300 people, who knew Craig from his boyhood days, through his time in DC. Over all that time reporters found one man who said he had sex with Craig and two who said Craig hit on them. Should we burn Craig at the stake now or tomorrow?

People have had suspicions about Craig since 1982 when he made a very unwise political move. A Congressional page was claiming three Congressmen had sex with pages. Newspapers questioned Craig, just as they questioned every Congressman. A reporter who was working in DC at the time explained how Craig brought heat down on himself.

It was simply an inquiry: ‘Have you heard anything? Who have you heard about? Have you heard any names mentioned? What's your reaction to this news?'

"The next thing I know, Larry Craig has issued a press release: ‘This isn't me.' Which I just thought was a bizarre and ultimately very foolish thing to do.

"He was the only person going on the record anywhere. And of course, when you do that, it's like raw meat. He's saying, ‘Nobody's actually accusing, but it wasn't me!' It's no wonder it's dogged him. He denied something that no one had accused him of."

Fair enough. Dude might be gay. But a five month investigation? Nice use of your resources during this time of war and massive corruption. I don’t expect much from Idaho, but this is a new low.

Craig does have a record of voting against gay rights. In 2006 he supported a State amendment that bars gay marriage and civil unions. He also supported an amendment to the US Constitution in 2004 to ban gay marriage. Craig is against extending civil rights protection to gays in the workplace and opposes allowing homosexuals in the military. So, clearly the man would be a hypocrite if he were exposed as a gay man.

But launching a five month investigation and arresting him in a bathroom stall for tapping his foot has swung me over to his side. Leave the dude the fuck alone. The newspaper went as far as to interview Craig in front of his wife, where a tape was played of a man claiming he had sex with the Senator.

Suzanne Craig's eyes reddened and filled with tears as she listened. After her husband's denial, she said, "I'm incensed that you would even consider such a piece of trash as a credible source."

To which Craig added, "Jiminy God!"

Jiminy God? Okay, that is pretty gay.

A friend who is not normally naive, was surprised that the "tap your foot for a BJ" graffiti in mens restrooms are actual advertisements. They are usually found in redneck dive bars and truck stops. The most vocal homophobic people are terrified of themselves.

There's some really excellent stuff from Wonkette on this situation. Namely this video, which is awesome:

He plead guilty, but says he " did no wrong" .

Somewhere in there is a lie. I'm sure of it.

He only denies being "gay", since he considers himself to be heterosexual because he's married and has 3 kids. He didn't deny that he also likes to have sex with another man. Therefore that would make him bisexual. So what he pleaded guilty to is correct.

And therefore you are also correct. He is in fact a switch-hitter who got caught cheating.

My thoughts exactly.

And yeah, why is it anyone's business if someone is gay or not? Maybe I'm being naive but I think peoples' sexual matters are private unless there is abuse involved. Like I said though, my take on this is probably naive

Let me just play devil's advocate here.

Aren't people's sexual matters private until they perform them in public?

It's not like he was just skinnydipping at Lonely Lake. He was (allegedly) soliciting for sex in a public rest room.

And as a side note, if I were that officer and, while questioning the dude, he:

handed the arresting officer a business card that identified him as a U.S. senator and said, "What do you think about that?"

I would have been thrilled out of my mind to arrest him. Absolutely thrilled.

Oh, that is beautiful.

Well, the paper had recently decided not to publish the story - after meeting with Craig and his lawyers. After the decision was made, the Minnesota arrest was suddenly leaked to Roll Call. I wonder who did that? Maybe the reporter who had spent five months on a story and came up with only one guy who would admit to having sex with Craig?

Sorry, but it's a witch hunt IMO. And I don't give a shit if he is gay or not, a newpaper researching someone's sexual habits is disgusting.

I never said in my article that the Stateman's report was a result of the arrest.

Bringing your wife to an interview about whether or not you are gay seems entirely appropriate. Thinking the reporter would have a tape of a guy claiming to have had sex with you probably never entered his mind.

I get the guy is a hypocrite. But I am more disturbed by the facts involved in the arrest and the five month investigation.

I don't know... I agree that "a newpaper researching someone's sexual habits is disgusting", but I can't put a full stop there. There are conditions/ifs/ands/buts...

I can't say it's not newsworthy and deserved (and almost journalistically responsible?) when the individual involved exploits "family values" as a key piece of his legislative agenda and voting record and appeals to voters based on his stance on the matter. If you want privacy about your own sexuality, don't encourage your voters and fellow legislators to factor any aspect of (consensual) sexuality into political life.

I equate it to someone touting themselves as "pro life" yet supporting the death penalty (oh wait, people don't as easily identify that as hypocrisy) or someone taking a hardline approach on drug enforcement while using or selling.

"You do it to yourself, and that's why it really hurts".

I just heard on the news that several Republican senators are calling for his resignation.

That seems a bit extreme to me. He plead guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct. Why would a misdemeanor justify the removal of an elected senator?

Because he's a hypocrite and has been lying? He is a US Senator.

That only leaves the fact that he is/may be gay. The Republican witch-hunters should at least say what they mean.

If you want to investigate some actual crime he may have committed, such as child-molesting, go ahead and do so. But let's not suggest that he should be tossed out before evidence of something more serious than misdemeanor disorderly conduct is established.

Three GOP senators so far, according to the BBC article here.

Republican leaders announced on Wednesday that Mr Craig had agreed temporarily to stand down from three Senate committees.

"This is not a decision we take lightly, but we believe this is in the best interest of the Senate until this situation is resolved by the ethics committee," a statement issued by Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell and others said.

Speaking on the NBC network's Tonight Show, Arizona Senator John McCain said: "It harms our reputation with the American people, which is already pretty tarnished."

Republican Senator Norman Coleman, of Minnesota, called for him to stand down, saying: "Senator Craig pled guilty to a crime involving conduct unbecoming to a senator."

Michigan Republican Congressman Pete Hoekstra also urged his resignation, saying Mr Craig "represents the Republican Party".

I'm from Minnesota, and I've been arrested (for a misdemeanor. Come on, I'm not a felon!). I've gone to court in Hennepin County. If you plead guilty, you sign a statement that says, to paraphrase, "I acknowlege that I cannot plead guilty if I feel I am innocent. By pleading guilty, I waive any right I have to claim innocence at a later date."

The judges also tend to ask things like, "Are you sure you want to plead guilty? Are you aware of the consequences of this decision? Have you talked to a lawyer about this?"

Probably because by pleading guilty you're admitting that you actually did the thing you were charged with doing.

So there's definitely a lie there somewhere. Probably the part where he said he did no wrong.
