Republican Senator Taps His Gay Foot Near Cop!

In what may be the lamest sex scandal of all time, Senator Larry Craig of Idaho, was arrested in June by a Minneapolis airport cop for “disorderly conduct.” The undercover officer thought Craig was sending signals indicating he was looking for sex in an airport bathroom. Man on man sex. Craig pleaded guilty, paid a $575 fine and was put on probation for one year. The details of the arrest are amazingly retarded.

The bathroom is apparently known as a place where fellas go to have sex with other fellas. Airport police were conducting a sting and had made “numerous arrests” before they bagged the Senator. The police report is both pathetic and weird.

First the report says that Craig entered a stall next to the policeman and put his luggage against the door. The officer claimed that is what gay men do.

My experience has shown that individuals engaging in lewd conduct use their bags to block the view from the front of their stall.

Right! That is exactly what gay men do. Also, I do it because men usually pee on the floor around the toilet and I don’t want my luggage to smell like urine.

At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot, which was within my stall area.

Anyone else getting a boner at this point? This is some awesome literary porn.

Next Craig “swiped his hand beneath the stall divider several times.” That was enough for the law. The cop showed his ID. Craig was not pleased.

With my left hand near the floor, I pointed towards the exit. Craig responded, 'No!'

At the airport police station, Craig tried to explain the situation.

Craig…told police he has a "wide stance" in the bathroom and reached down to pick up a piece of paper from the floor.

Honest enough. When I shit I usually spread my legs at 90-degree angles, but I am also a lizard. Craig was released after 45 minutes and he went on his way. Poor guy must have thought he got away with it, until someone leaked it to Roll Call yesterday.

This is one of the creepiest arrests I have ever heard of. I know gays are targeted all the time with shit like this, but the details are disturbing. How tapping your foot would ever hold up in court as lewd behavior is beyond me. The purpose of stings like this one, are to scare men with public exposure and hope they take a guilty plea. Looks pretty effective.

Even more disturbing is a story in today’s Idaho Statesman detailing a five-month investigation into Craig’s alleged homosexuality. The paper interviewed over 300 people, who knew Craig from his boyhood days, through his time in DC. Over all that time reporters found one man who said he had sex with Craig and two who said Craig hit on them. Should we burn Craig at the stake now or tomorrow?

People have had suspicions about Craig since 1982 when he made a very unwise political move. A Congressional page was claiming three Congressmen had sex with pages. Newspapers questioned Craig, just as they questioned every Congressman. A reporter who was working in DC at the time explained how Craig brought heat down on himself.

It was simply an inquiry: ‘Have you heard anything? Who have you heard about? Have you heard any names mentioned? What's your reaction to this news?'

"The next thing I know, Larry Craig has issued a press release: ‘This isn't me.' Which I just thought was a bizarre and ultimately very foolish thing to do.

"He was the only person going on the record anywhere. And of course, when you do that, it's like raw meat. He's saying, ‘Nobody's actually accusing, but it wasn't me!' It's no wonder it's dogged him. He denied something that no one had accused him of."

Fair enough. Dude might be gay. But a five month investigation? Nice use of your resources during this time of war and massive corruption. I don’t expect much from Idaho, but this is a new low.

Craig does have a record of voting against gay rights. In 2006 he supported a State amendment that bars gay marriage and civil unions. He also supported an amendment to the US Constitution in 2004 to ban gay marriage. Craig is against extending civil rights protection to gays in the workplace and opposes allowing homosexuals in the military. So, clearly the man would be a hypocrite if he were exposed as a gay man.

But launching a five month investigation and arresting him in a bathroom stall for tapping his foot has swung me over to his side. Leave the dude the fuck alone. The newspaper went as far as to interview Craig in front of his wife, where a tape was played of a man claiming he had sex with the Senator.

Suzanne Craig's eyes reddened and filled with tears as she listened. After her husband's denial, she said, "I'm incensed that you would even consider such a piece of trash as a credible source."

To which Craig added, "Jiminy God!"

Jiminy God? Okay, that is pretty gay.

Yeah, I don't know how big the problem really is, either. I am kinda podunk, though, and find all of it vaguely amazing. I'm like....people do that?

I can't say I've never had sex in public, but sticking your hand under the stall next to you to see if the person there is up for some hot action goes beyond the scope of what happens in my little world.

I get the guy is a hypocrite. But I am more disturbed by the facts involved in the arrest and the five month investigation.

It's not a witch hunt unless the cop was targeting him, which nobody has alleged to my knowledge. Craig pleaded guilty, which is a matter of public record. It was only "leaked" to Roll Call in the sense that no reporters had picked up on it yet, not that it's somehow private information.

You seem to be missing the main point of why this is a story. It's been Craig who has spent his working life insisting that it makes a difference whether someone is gay or not, and as other posters have pointed out, he's made his career largely on his efforts to deprive gay people of important rights, including playing a leading role in an attempt to amend the Constitution to prevent gay people from marrying their same-sex partners.

He is a public figure who chose to inject people's private sexual behavior into his political views so he could keep getting reelected, and, as I said above, he probably would have voted to fund restroom sting operations before he got caught. If that's your platform, the personal does become political, and your own behavior becomes fair game for reporters, doesn't it? Especially if there have been persistent rumors going back 15 years? (He denied involvement in a Congressional page-related sex scandal in 1992.)

When cops are on prostitution stings, the officer (be they "client" or a fake hooker) has to get the other party to say something along the lines of "I'll do X for X dollars."

Shouldn't that apply in this situation as well? Vague, possibly misunderstood gestures, in my opinion, are not enough to arrest someone on. Yeah, it was weird, and just maybe it was his intent to get a little bathroom lovin', but it strikes me as odd that the police arrested him and were allowed to press charges on such flimsy evidence.

It's a shaming sting. The evidence was enough for arrest, probably not conviction, but certainly enough to humiliate a closeted middle aged guy. The police aren't necessarily trying lock the guy up, but rather to get people to stop cruising the airport john. The fed used to do the same thing all the time in internet pedophile cases. Entrap somebody, splash their name all over the news and make all the other sleezebags think twice about trying to pick up 14 year olds in chat rooms.

I have very mixed feelings about it, as a valid policing model, but unfortunately its the only way to address certain intractable problems. The good congressman was offering to give a blowjob, which means that the only way to get proof positive is to have the cop stick his dick under the stall, which we don't allow.

Oh shit,
I just discovered that I've been propositioned by gay men in public restrooms. I'm not sure if I should be flattered about this.

No, a fifteen year old shooting a fourteen year old in the face is disgusting. People being turned away from hospitals because they have no insurance and the public system is in collapse is disgusting. Soldiers in forward combat positions without body armor is disgusting.

These are all issues that get pushed aside while the GOP exploits fear to get re-elected. Unlike who Britney is screwing, or the fact that Lindsey Lohan doesn't seem to own panties, Rep Craig and his ilk have made sexuality an issue. They ride it into office. That makes it news.

Also, the question is not who "leaked" it, the question is how the good congressman managed to not turn up on the police blotter or the court docket. Reporters watch these things. They have sources in the courts and with the police. If this didn't turn up on anybody's radar it's because it was buried, which was likely part of the plea deal.

Thanks champ. I'm going to continue to decide what is disgusting to me and what is not disgusting to me. I think a 5 month investigation into someone's sexuality is disgusting. I think someone shooting a 15 year old in the face is horrfying.

Well, chum, I'm going to continue to take issue with your manufactured indignation and your lack of cogent rebuttal. Sorry, but I'm just not buying the moral high ground here. A politician who made his career on making sexuality a public and political issue got his sexuality made a public and political issue. That's not disgusting, that's the logical consequence of his actions. I mean for fuck's sake, his arrest was after the interview and after his lawyers had met with the paper, and the guy still goes and solicits sex in a Men's room.

There is a difference between a "cogent rebuttal" (hey, you're a lawyer!) and coming up with something that a narcissist will accept as reasonable.
