Al Gonzales is a man of integrity, decency and principal.
Except for lying to Congress, trying to get a barely conscious Attorney General to sign a a Constitution destroying document while in his hospital bed and making the Justice Department a partisan branch of the White House.
Al Gonzales has played a critical role in shaping our policies in the war on terror.
Under his leadership the Justice Department has made a priority of protecting children from Internet predators.
By pressuring telecommunications companies to break the law by turning over databases of their customers Internet activities, without warrants.
He made enforcement of civil rights laws a top priority.
By shifting the focus from crimes against minorities to helping religions spread the word of Jesus. He even took on a case to help the oppressed white voters in Mississippi.
He aggressively and publicly pursued public corruption.
By firing 9 US Attorneys who refused to falsely prosecute Democrats before the 2006 elections and also because they were aggressively pursuing prosecutions against corrupt Republicans.
As Attorney General he helped to play an important role in helping to confirm two jurists in Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito.
He helped them evade questions and lie to Congress. Exactly what the Founding Fathers feared.
He went on to become the 100th Texas Secretary of State.
Where he narrowed the possibility for clemency of inmates facing the death penalty and made sure George didnt have to serve on a jury because he would have had to answer questions about past drug use and his DUI.
He became a close friend.
That is nothing to brag about.
After months of unfair treatment that has created a harmful distraction at the Justice Department.
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. Welcome to oversight, you sniffling little bitch.
Its sad that we live in a time when a talented and honorable person is impeded from doing important work.
Like busting state legalized pot stores in California and fighting porn.
Because his good name was dragged through the mud for political reasons.
Yes, this is true. His name was dragged through the mud because he politicized the Justice Department, which cannot function if it only aids one party. The Department is now a shell of its former self, entirely undermined by one man and his partisan actions.
Blah blah blah until a nominee has been confirmed by the Senate.
OH SWEET JESUS! That is going to be awesome! What asshole will you put forth to be beaten and battered around by an angry Congress?
Feeling lonely yet, George?
This should not be the end for Alberto. He should still be prosecuted for lying to Congress. At the very least he should be disbarred.
They are getting lazier, that's for sure. They didn't even bother to come up with a "I'm moving on to spend more time with family" excuse. Bush can't even hide his own nonsense hypocrisy, "dragging his good name through the... mud". Plamegate anybody?

He needed a lap dog like Gonzo to make sure that no investigations could plague him before he's safely away from the whitehouse...now what I wonder?
Possibly a recess appointment. The timing is perfect.
Nicely researched article, particularly considering the fact that Gonzales just announced his resignation.
I won't miss that turd any more than you will, but I'm afraid of whoever Bush will appoint to replace him. I thought Ashcroft was bad but Gonzales turned out to be worse.

I agree, I actually grew to like Al G because his time at the DOJ soon became quite hollow and stagnant, and politicians in his position are finding it harder to push their own partisan agendas now with a democratic congress and the administration making a quick downward spiral. I would actually like more of Gonzo's "doing nothing" rather than putting up with whoever Bush selects as his replacement.
I just watched those two videos? who the fuck were those guys talking about resigning? it wasn't gonzo...wtf? defended civil liberties? I can't believe they didn't start laughing.
Chertoff is being floated as the replacement, so things could actually get worse.
Good job FTR. It's too bad that so many people have their head buried so deep in the sand that they still refuse to see just how bad this president is. It is so scary to me that there are people close enough to the prestard to smell the evil that crawls of his body yet they still dont see it and are willing to sacrifice themselves on his behalf. What was that Marilyn Manson lyric? "You can't see the forest for the trees. You can't smell your own shit on your knees." The thought that he will pardon Gonzo freaks me out the most. Pardons should be handled just like a bill except the president can't veto the decision.
Michael Chertoff, the secretary of homeland security who is a former federal prosecutor, assistant attorney general and federal judge; Christopher Cox, the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission; and Larry D. Thompson, a former deputy attorney general who is now senior vice president and general counsel of PepsiCo Inc.

Am I the only one scratching my head? I am filled with some odd mixture of glee and dread following the departures of Turd Blossom and Gonzo. This bad lyric keeps rolling around my head; "why now?" This is all just a little too good. What happens next?

I really like how Al finished up his stupid little speech and then ran the fuck out the side door before anybody could ask him a question. Way to reinforce the idea that you really are a man of integrity and you have nothing to hide - by announcing your resignation and then ducking out the door before anyone can ask you about it.
