The Republican Candidates Are Sad Little Turds

The big news from this weekend’s Iowa straw poll was how little the voting public thinks of the current crop of Republican candidates. Ten thousand fewer Republicans cast votes for this group of candidates than they did for the 2000 candidates. “None of the above” is consistently winning in Republican polls. The reason is simple: Every Republican candidate has some horrible quality that makes them unelectable to the base.

Rudy Giuliani won’t win the nomination because he is pro-abortion and has an ugly marital history. He is twice divorced, once marrying a cousin and another time living through a nasty public separation while Mayor of New York.

27% of Republican voters see Giuliani as politically conservative, while 68% say moderate or liberal.

There is no way Giuliani will win a Republican nomination with the current state of religious lunacy that has a hold over the party. Sorry, loser, you’re out.

Fred Thompson is the newest of the candidates who has absolutely no chance. Freddy also has a problem with his abortion loving past. He was a lobbyist for a pro-choice group, which may actually be worse than being ideologically against abortion.

22% have an unfavorable view of Thompson.

Watch that number shoot up when he actually joins the race and Republicans get a look at his abortion record. Sorry, actor boy, you’re gone.

Mitt Romney is such a poor candidate for the Republican ticket that it is astounding. He has spent loads of money and is only polling in third place.

31% of Republican Voters have an unfavorable opinion of him.

Why? He’s a Mormon. Game over.

John McCain is old and shockingly pathetic. He attached himself to Bush’s surge and took a walk through the streets of Iraq surrounded by helicopters and soldiers. That was the day his campaign ended.

Within his own party, McCain is viewed favorably 54% and unfavorably by 40%.

He is also considered to be a "moderate" turncoat by many Republicans. Good night, grandpa.

An August 5th Rasmussen poll has Giuliani on top. (None of the above was not given as an option)

Giuliani 25%
Thompson 24%
Romney 14%
McCain 11%
Mike Huckabee 3%
Sam Brownback 2%
Ron Paul, Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo are just tiny blips of nothingness.

Republicans need a viable candidate to step in and take over this mess or the masses are going to vote for No One to face the Democratic opponent.

I believe the title is "Republicans are sad little turds" and somebody commented earlier on how "intolerant" Democrats were in relation to the oh so tolerant Republican party... they are so deep in the polls because they are so out of touch with the American people... that's the point.

Well yeah, but that same person would likely state that "kowtowing to the gays" - y'know, caring about what they think - makes the Democrats out of touch with the American people.

Fixed.

Other than Clinton, the Democrats haven't advanced a genuinely electable candidate since . . . FDR, really. Unless you count Kennedy, which is debatable.

That's a good assessment, including Kennedy, considering the controversy surrounding his election and his poor standing in the polls in the weeks before his assassination.
It doesn't appear they're going to be any different this time, either. If they win, it'll be like Carter, who won because the GOP fucked up.
It would be nice if either side could advance someone worth two shits, but all I can see is the flaws, maybe because the incumbent and his predecessor were so disappointing.

Whether you are a Democrat or a Republican - at this moment, the choices aren't very good. This race is wide open. I don't think anyone can call this one. But I do think Hillary will get the Democratic nomination and either Obama or Edwards will be picked as her running mate. (My WAG).

On the Republican side - Most of the candidates that even remotely have a shot haven't entered the race (yet).

This article shows just how little understanding you have of the Iowa Straw Poll, or the Republicans in general. I'm amazed at how a community that prides itself on tolerance and acceptance, can be so jaded and intolerant of others political views....quite to the point of ridicule. That is unacceptible, and I think you need to consider an apology to those of us who happen to be Republicans. Our money spends just as easily as anyone else's. I don't think that we paid our membership dues to come here and have our views disparaged daily by individuals who have the faintest notion of what they speak.

Frankly, I think you'd be better served monitoring your own side of the aisle, and covering the lightweights in the Democratic race. mad

Like you, I am a Republican. And while I do not agree with EVERYTHING FearTheReaper said, with all due respect Sir, he's definitely done his research. Look at the Republican candidates who are actually running. Forget the ones that MIGHT run.

Do any of them really look all that promising?

It is truly sad to think that right now, most Americans are against the gays. It's my hope that the next generation won't be so narrow minded. But you DO have a point.

... meanwhile the Dem's keep talking out of both sides of their mouth - proposing bills that would increase abstinence-only (which is widely known to NOT work) education funding to $141 million (up $28 million).

To quote James Wagoner of Advocates for Youth, "Let's face it. With friends like these, who needs conservative Republicans?"

[with props to this month's Playboy for the article]

Say what you want about Republicans, but at least they're upfront about their bigotry, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and desire to see the rich get richer at everyone elses expense. You *know* what you're getting with the GOP... the Dem's, however...

It shouldn't matter if Romney is Morman, the only reason why he is in third rihgt now is because no one knows who he is. He is set to win the first 2 or 3 straw polls so well see if his stance changes. And i hate to defend him but Thompson worked on the abortion lobby when he was very very young in politics.

Romney won the straw poll because it's a pay to vote event. He had the most money to give to prospective voters for him, and because he worked hard to win the thing, putting more of his money and effort in there, in hopes of doing well enough against Giuliani and McCain. They basically stuck it to him by not participating, which takes of fair bit of the luster off his win.

I'm an independent and no candidate from either party gets me really excited.

I just find it hard to believe that these men and women are the best we have for the job.

I'm thinking that no Republican who is worth anything politically would touch this race with a 10-foot pole.

Think about the colossal military, economic, budgetary, and infrastructure mess the next president will inherit.

Mitt Romney and his 5 'chicken hawk' sons are a disgrace to the country. While he will happily continue to send the sons and daughters of this country off to die in The Bushies absurd war if he is elected his sons have decided that

"one of the ways my sons are showing suport for our nation is helping to get me eleceted, because they think I'd be a great president." replied the cowardly piece of crap Mitt Romney

In which case, which candidate should the Democrats put forward? Given what they're going to inherit.

Personally I'm saying Clinton. She's already tainted in so many people's eyes; let her take the flak of sorting it all out. Then when she doesn't run in 2012 maybe the Dems can get solidly behind someone else.

That could be it. Even then though, I can't think of a Republican who is not running who would make a good President. smile

My vote is for Huckabee, I think he is the most likeable of the lot. But he may be to nice to fix this mess. I am also partial to Giuliani I lived in NYC when he was mayor and I thought he was awesome. I had the chance to meet him and have seen him speak a few times. I think it sucks he doesnt stand a chance because of his liberal views on abortion. Oh but the whole marrying his cousin, thats suspect!
