How to Save a Life for 20 Bucks

In my first post I asked everyone to sign this petition in an attempt to help save the lives of 29,000 children each day. In the comments a lot of you asked if there wasn’t something more you could do in addition to signing the petition. There definitely is.

My absolute favorite group helping to alleviate poverty in the developing world is Heifer International. I like Heifer because they subscribe to the “teach a person to fish” philosophy of charitable giving.

They do this by giving livestock and training to impoverished people around the world. That livestock then creates a life long food and revenue stream for the family. One of my favorite examples is a flock of chicks.

Chickens are a real value. Starting at six months, they can lay up to 200 eggs a year — a reliable source of protein for children who otherwise subsist mostly on starches. Extra eggs can be sold to pay for school, clothes and medicine. And in the vegetable garden, chickens peck at bugs and weeds, scratch up the soil and enrich it with droppings.

So for 20 bucks you can donate a flock of 10 hens and one rooster (that's 2,000 eggs a year!) through Heifer International and literally help lift a family up out of poverty forever. Many recipients end up with hundreds of chickens and transform entire regions. Part of the Heifer philosophy is passing on the gift. So each recipient is required to pass along offspring from the original animals to another family, so they can lift themselves out of poverty.

If you do decide to make a donation, I promise you’ll never have felt so good after (legally) spending $20.

Go fuck a vacuum. Heifer International is a great organization doing good work, and because they already have the infrastructure, it's better for all parties to let them use it. They know better than most of us how to help people out.

Ha! Definitely the first time the phrase "Heifer International is a great organization…" was preceded by "Go fuck a vacuum." Awesome.

I have very little patience for Sally Struthers-esque methodologies that dictate that I help the Afrikans with just a little of my money through a middle man.

Yeah because Sally Struthers and Heifer are totally in the same league. Jesus.

Yeah, you'd rather sit on your ass and do nothing (besides poo-pooing people who've actually done something). It's cool, you need the pagan bumpersticker money. Great use of "Afrikans," though.

We're still waiting for you to illuminate us with all the tribes of Oceana that
sell Shark Fin's Soup on Amazon, BTW.

Who's dictating anything? No one. You're perfectly free to move to Africa, start a chicken farm, and donate chickens all over the continent on your own if you aren't into middle men. Of course, a large group that does that, and accepts donations, can do that a hell of a lot more efficiently.
