World's Greatest “Fuck You” Ever

In November, Keith Ellison of Minnesota became the first Muslim elected to Congress. Ellison then told the press that he would swear his oath on a Koran and all hell broke loose.

Conservative commentators went ape shit because they incorrectly believe the oath should be taken on something called The Bible. The controversy swelled when a fellow Congressman, Virgil Goode, declared:

"When I raise my hand to take the oath on Swearing In Day, I will have the Bible in my other hand. I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way. The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran."

Ellison was born in the United States and his family roots in this country can be traced back to 1742. None of that mattered to Goode, who became a hero on Fox News where he claimed that he stands for the principles upon which this country was founded. Goode represents the same Virginia county where Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743.

Which is probably why Ellison decided to shove Goode’s morals down his ignorant throat throat with a little American history. Today Keith Ellison announced he would take his oath of office on a Koran that was owned by Thomas Jefferson.

Jefferson's copy is an English translation by George Sale published in the 1750s; it survived the 1851 fire that destroyed most of Jefferson's collection and has his customary initialing on the pages.

It survived the fire because God wanted it to be used in a future “go fuck yourself” moment. Goode has no comment.

This has the potential for some serious lulz. However, there needs to be more internets friendly writing.
I shall demonstrate:

Ellison was born in Merika and his family roots in this country can be traced back at least 100 years ago. None of that mattered to Goode, who became an hero on Fox News where he claimed that he is chargin' his laser. Goode represents the same Virginia county where Thomas Jefferson was born last Thursday.

Jefferson is more commonly credited as the father of the Democratic party. Republicans are the party of Lincoln.

If I ever ran for congress and won, I'd do the swearing-in ceremony with a comic book.

And yet, shockingly enough, Abraham Lincoln, too, was a rational person who strayed from associating himself with religion. Most specifically Christianity.

I always laugh at these people who think they have the right to try and rewrite history, but then I die a little inside when I remember that a lot of them are in charge in this country.

While I was very pleased when I read this - I enjoy a good bitch slap like anyone else - I feel compelled to also say that mixing religion with politics is just as bad when the religion is Islam as it is when the religion is Christianity - or Judaism.

The fact that this is a news item is a reflection of how far we have moved from the idea that religion is a private matter between a person and his or her diety, not something that should be a public issue.

I would also like to make note of how hard it was to concentrate on this post with those bodacious titties bouncing over the comment box.

Otherwise, why would he announce to the press what book he'll be using in an otherwise completely overlooked ceremony?

Um, because they asked him.

they did? Every story I've seen has refered to Ellison's "anouncement." I've not seen anything about the announcement being at response to questioning. But even if that's the case, the swearing in is a private ceremony and he doesn't have to tell anyone what book he's using (nor is he required to use any book at all). If he wanted to get to the business of legislating without creating a public relations show of the ceremony he easily could methinks.

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the way the media works. It is their job to make a big deal out of everything and anything. They scrambled to breathlessly report on the "first Muslim Congressman" when he won the Democratic Primary in June. When he won, some of them literally asked him to prove he was not "one of them", with the clear insinuation that because he is Muslim, he hates America. And so when the "first Muslim Congressman" who could still be "one of them" is going to be sworn in, you can bet your bottom dollar that even if he hadn't announced it (and I'm way too lazy to bother looking it up), it would have been brought up eventually.

And saying he's not required to use any book at all is a cop-out. He's Muslim. Therefore the Koran is important to him. Therefore he wants to be sworn in on it. You're basically giving him shit because he is a religious person, which is way tolerant of you, by the way.

Both or just Ellison? Actually that was a bit strong. My best answer would be that I'm incapable of considering anyone else's perspecitve blush Just sick of people throwing religion at each other is all.

Well, what you have to understand is that politics and religion go together like peas and carrots. It is only government and religion that is supposed to be separate. We will never, ever live in an America where religion is not part of the public debate.

Some could argue that as the first Muslim Congressman, Ellison has a moral duty to make a show of how patriotic he is and how much he loves America while still loving his God. It may go a long way to proving to the Virgil Goodes and Glen Becks of the world that just because you are Muslim, that does not mean you are a terrorist.

Yet others will point out that they whole "not really swearing in on, but posing with the Quran for the photo op" thing is obviously just a whorish publicity stunt and that just because the media might have asked for comment doesn't mean you are obligated to give one.

Um... separation of church and state, anybody? Why do we do the Bible swearing, anyway? To a decent portion of this country, the Bible is nothing more than a work of fiction (even if it is based on some fact).

Thus, to those people (myself included), it seems rather odd to have government officials and people in court proceedings swear upon a book of lies.

I'm just sayin'.

It's not required, and for the official swearing-in of Congress there are no scriptures used of any kind. It's in private ceremonies that Bibles and Korans are used.
