World's Greatest “Fuck You” Ever

In November, Keith Ellison of Minnesota became the first Muslim elected to Congress. Ellison then told the press that he would swear his oath on a Koran and all hell broke loose.

Conservative commentators went ape shit because they incorrectly believe the oath should be taken on something called The Bible. The controversy swelled when a fellow Congressman, Virgil Goode, declared:

"When I raise my hand to take the oath on Swearing In Day, I will have the Bible in my other hand. I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way. The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran."

Ellison was born in the United States and his family roots in this country can be traced back to 1742. None of that mattered to Goode, who became a hero on Fox News where he claimed that he stands for the principles upon which this country was founded. Goode represents the same Virginia county where Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743.

Which is probably why Ellison decided to shove Goode’s morals down his ignorant throat throat with a little American history. Today Keith Ellison announced he would take his oath of office on a Koran that was owned by Thomas Jefferson.

Jefferson's copy is an English translation by George Sale published in the 1750s; it survived the 1851 fire that destroyed most of Jefferson's collection and has his customary initialing on the pages.

It survived the fire because God wanted it to be used in a future “go fuck yourself” moment. Goode has no comment.

Um, because they asked him.

Neither of these dipshits care for an instant to consider the situation from anyone else's perspective, and niether should be allowed anywhere near anything of Jefferson's. IMO they shouldn't be allowed near the capitol either but that's another topic.

Oh please oh please, do enlighten us as to why.

I have no problem with it. It's called freedom, and some people in this country seem to forget what that is. I'd like to use my freedom to give Goode the middle finger.

I honestly thought this was FTR taking liberties as he is wont to do, but no, Goode really did say this.

*sigh*

My regard for humanity is degraded a little more each day.

I don't see what owning a book has to do with endorsing it but it's an interesting turn of events nonetheless.

What people don't know is that Congressmen don't actually swear on a bible, koran or anything. That was all made up by the conservatives bringing up a fuss just to get people in a panic, and everybody fell for it.
All they do is take a picture of them swearing on it, but it's not actually part of the initiation ceremony.

It doesn't. However, it does help to impeach the notion that the book itself is a poison that somehow undercuts the values the nation was founded on (whatever that means).

they did? Every story I've seen has refered to Ellison's "anouncement." I've not seen anything about the announcement being at response to questioning. But even if that's the case, the swearing in is a private ceremony and he doesn't have to tell anyone what book he's using (nor is he required to use any book at all). If he wanted to get to the business of legislating without creating a public relations show of the ceremony he easily could methinks.

Both or just Ellison? Actually that was a bit strong. My best answer would be that I'm incapable of considering anyone else's perspecitve blush Just sick of people throwing religion at each other is all.

Sure Goode is an ignorant ass, but the fact that Jefferson had a wider field of vision than either of these two twats hardly qualifies as a fuck you by Ellison. IMO they shouldn't be allowed near the capitol either but that's another topic. Obviously it's not as important to Ellison what book he uses as it is that he makes a big to-do about using a Koran. Otherwise, why would he announce to the press what book he'll be using in an otherwise completely overlooked ceremony? He & the modern Christian right have much more in common than they'd like to admit. For one they're completely obsessed with making a spectacle of what their predecessors (both in religion and politics) had a great deal of respect for. I understanding It was usually difficult to GET Jefferson to discuss his personal religious beliefs.

Wow, a well-though-out, non knee-jerk response. Nice post.
