Michael Totten in Lebanon

SuicideGirls newswire co-creator Michael Totten recently published this account of attending the Hezbollah organized opposition marches in beirut this fall.

“You think this is a war?” I said.

“It is shit,” he said. “It’s bad for everybody, for the government and the opposition.”

“You’re independent then,” I said.

“I have no side,” he said. “I’m proud to be Lebanese, but I have no side.”

His name was Chibli and he told me Godot was open throughout the July War. His little bar became something of a haven for visiting foreign correspondents. I didn’t see any visiting foreign correspondents in Godot on that day, nor anywhere else on any other day either.

Godot was closed, though, until 4:00. So I went to Torino, the only place open in a neighborhood where support for Aounists was slim and support for Hezbollah has always been zero.

Such a surreal place, Beirut. Inside the bar was a world of hipsters, booze, good conversation, Italian-style espresso, flirting, and Depeche Mode on the stereo. Outside was Hezbollah, guns, tanks, and the army.

A car roared past bristling with Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) and Marada flags. Marada is a tiny party in North Lebanon headed by Suleiman Franjieh – who lost his parliament seat in the last election – that is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Syrian Baath Party. Seeing Aounists and Marada in the same car was truly bizarre. During most of Syria’s post-war occupation of Lebanon the Aounists were at times the only people in the country who bravely demonstrated in public against the regime. They were beaten, arrested, and sometimes tortured for their acts of defiance. Aoun’s newfound alliance with the old enemy enrages most of the Christian community. The FPM is less popular than ever as a result.

I would love to see more like this in the SG newswire, if at all possible.

I wondered what Totten had gotten himself into. It would be nice to have a credible conservative voice back on the Newswire again.

Sorry, I meant to put quotation marks around "credible." In any event, I am glad he is safe, and I look forward to his return to the Newswire.

You don't remember all the arguments Totten got into about how he wasn't a conservative?

Ha ha, definitely not a conservative. Voted straight Democrat last month.

My foreign policy views are vaguely right-of-center, but I'm left-of-center on just about everything else.

i do not share most of your views, but nevertheless I appreciate all the pics and perspective you provided. Coverage of this event was extremely difficult to find in the traditional media. I look forward to reading more of your work, but hope you will take into account the problems faced by the South that are ignored by the current govt.

I never did consider these demonstrations as "violence" or a "coup attempt". I wish we would have such mass demos in America to pressure Bush/Cheny to step down. Perhaps it's cynical of me but maybe that's why coverage was so sparse -- didn't want to give people any ideas, hmmm????

I remember them.

Just as I remember wishing that his news posts weren't always so predictable, as in, you knew what he would say on any topic that he posted on before he ever posted it. On domestic policy issues, he'd kick the Bushies in the ankles, and on foreign policy, he'd be Little-Green-Footballs-lite.

I always wanted to read something by Totten that genuinely surprised me and gave me something to think about.

So, in that spirit, I'll welcome Mike back to the newswire and hope that he continues posting .... and that one day, he does in fact surprise me.

*fingers crossed*

It's tough in a forum that's limited almost exclusively to opinion-based content to not eventually be able to predict how a well known writer will respond to a particular bit of news. Once you've got a handle on their political sensibilities it makes sense that you could see how their lens shapes the way they interpret new news. The same could be said for the other politics writers on the site (including myself) or even better known poiltical editorialists like Paul Krugman, Charles Krauthammer or George Will. I think what's most important is how well people are able to back up their opinions with evidence.

I don't do op-ed writing much these days anyway. I'd much rather visit and write about Beirut, where I just came from, and Iraq and Afghanistan where I'm going next.
