Coca-Cola Cashes in on Green Trend

Coca-Cola's new concept store in Toronto comes in a neatly wrapped package: bamboo, overstuffed chairs, recycled cups and fair trade coffee. However the Yorkville store, Far Coast, won't admit its ties with Coke—a company renowned for gross human rights violations and murder, covered up by corporate branding and a sugar-coated smile.

As reported in NOW Magazine, the cafe is "a trendy teal and orange" with all the upscale features you'd expect to find in a modern coffee shop. Far Coast offers a fair trade option and features reclaimed wood in its design.

The cafe, however, is "basically appeasing people with the bare minimum," says Jennifer Wright of Green Shift, pioneers of the biodegradable coffee cup.

Silvio Annosantini, Coca-Cola's director of premium brewed beverages (how's that for a job title?), is quick to point out that a fair trade coffee is always available at Far Coast, perhaps taking aim at Starbucks, which only brews some once a month.

But consumers must wonder, where does the company get the rest of their beans? The company playing nice with coffee farmers is a little hard to swallow if you add up all the charges made by global human rights groups like New York-based Killer Coke.

NOW is confident that Toronto's green-conscious community will ask the right question: who's dying for your coffee?

Damn you Malloreigh! that's one more thing I'm going to have to stop buying. If I keep this up I'll soon be living on a farm making everything I need for myself. But out of curiousity, what's 'fair trade coffee'? I've never heard that term before, but then again I'm not a coffee drinker. Anyway, I really enjoyed your article, very informative.

ok, so i work for vista bakery, owned by lance incorporated, whose ceo is david singer. david singer is not only related to the sewing machine singers but he also is an ex-ceo of coke, i guess they credit him with bringing the company out of financial dire straits. i dunno.

anyway, this guy makes like 400,000 bucks a MONTH at lance but gets several million a year from coke to just not work for pepsi. if coke has that kind of money, i seriously doubt (like i would ever not suspect a large mega-corp of not caring) that coke gives shit number one about anything green except greenbacks.

besides, how can the coffee be fair trade if the fair trade part involves not buying the coffee from a large company, but rather a small farmner-owned co-op?

meh. i'll never go there.

besides, mister moto's cafe is only a half mile from my house. smile

i need to find me a job like that.. anyone looking to hire a non-employee?

and this fair trade coffee sounds like a marketing/hype term than informative.. my guess of the concept (without research because i was going to bed an hour ago, curse you interweb! curse you!) still leaves alot to be desired in the "helping the little guy" out field..

yeah, who cares about the right wing death squads Coke pays to murder trade union activists in colombia, or the fact that CocaCola stole millions of litres of precious water in Kerala India leaving drought like conditions and forcing farmers off their land

I ran a Boycott Coke campaign in my college a few years ago. We had a vote to try and stop the students Union from sellling Coke products in their shops or Bar.

The vote failed because right wingers campaigned on 'freedom of choice' which is complete nonsense because Coke does not care about our freedom of choice, if they had their way, they would have exclusive sales agreements everywhere in the world where the only products available to consume are coke products.

fair trade is a brand, but it's a not for profit brand, a mark available to any commodity that meets certain minimum criteria for their products. they must be organic, they must pay the primary producer a decent price and the producer must treat any employees he/she has properly.

it's an excellent program.

...because the degree to which you are annoyed is clearly the most important issue at stake.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder how you would react if Osama bin Laden decided to start up an ice cream company. If other people refused to support him by buying his products, would you have the same disdain for them? Would those of us who criticized his ice cream company just be "whining"? Would you buy from him just to piss us off?

Granted, the example is extreme, but I think it makes my point.

Also, you probably shouldn't say things like: "these activists or whoever," because it shows that you don't even have a clear idea of who is supposed to be annoying you. Maybe you are completely trolling, but if not, then at least try to understand what your position is supposed to be before you say stupid shit.

The first time I saw that place, I knew something was up. No coffee shop as hippie/hipster as it pretends to be would set up shop in fucking Yorkville, even if they could afford it.

The primary ingredients in Coke are sugar and carbon dioxide. As Alice (in Wonderland) reminded us: "If you keep drinking from a bottle marked 'poison' sooner or later it's bound to disagree with you."
