Republicans Are Complete Losers: Dems Take Senate

It’s all over. The AP just called Montana for Democrat Jon Tester. It is officially the worst night in Republican history. But they should stick with the Iraq war and the whole “religious” thing.

Democrats erased the Republican Senate majority Wednesday with a cliffhanger victory in Montana, hours after taking control of the House in an election that delivered a rebuke of GOP scandal, the Iraq war and the course of a nation.

Feel free to gloat, you deserve it.

Right. There's a mandatory recount since the margin is (well) below 1%. We only win if we get Virginia, too, though I'm happy as pie to have Montana (MONTANA?) in the fold.[/QUOTE

I just wanted to point out to you that the recount is mandatory.

Nope. According to CNN and the other sources I have seen, a recount in Virginia would have to be requested by the Republicans if Allen loses.

"Virginia does not conduct automatic recounts in close races, but the apparent loser can request one after the votes have been certified if the margin is less than 1 percent of the total votes cast, according to the State Board of Elections."

on the allen thing, this is interesting:

Talking Points Memo: by Joshua Micah Marshall November 8, 2006 01:50 AM

The Republicans have backed themselves into a corner in Virginia. If you're going to go to the mat with dirty tricks and voter suppression, your counting on staying under the rader and that once the election is over, folks will move on. If Allen contests the results of the election it changes the election from a single day event into a 3 or 4 week event, plenty of time to chase down those callerid numbers and phone bank contractors. Virginia isn't Ohio. It doesn't have Ken Blackwell to cover up the GOP shenanigans, and the state has already requested the FBI to look into them. The Allen campaign is going to have to make the choice of whether contesting the results is worth the chance of exposing criminal activity. Let's hope they choose to contest. It's our best hope of fully exposing the shenanigans of the GOP to the light of day and getting the mechanisms in place to prevent their use in the next election cycle.

maybe they'll just concede.

a republican killing field last night.. I could not be happier. In the past (pre stupid impeachment hearings) I would have been counted a moderate republican. Since then watching them turn into the party of aristocracy, theocracy and hypocrtical gay bashing, and the party of division politcs...

I am so happy to see them go. Bottle that dumb fuck bush and cheney and rove into the white house and keep them from doing any more damage the next two years.

It will never happen. Bush will veto the Democrats' "Cake And Ice Cream Everyday" bill, and this time next year it will still be his fault that everyone's life sucks.

Also, is the US media hideously biased towards any opposition party, or are they always working for the Dems?

Well, if you're using the SG Newswire as an example of the US media, I think the answer to your question is clear. However, if you're using the actual US media as an example of the US media, you're...oh...well...yeah, I guess it's still the Dems.

there are other reasons to skip a recount.

from tpm cafe:

Will GOP Senator George Allen, who's currently trailing Dem Jim Webb by about 7,000 votes, request a recount, thus dragging out the question of who will control the Senate for at least another month? It seems that will depend on what kind of numbers come in for Allen after the official canvas is complete. Today's Richmond Times-Dispatch reports:

A senior advisor to George Allen's Senate campaign said Allen would wait until after the vote is official later this month to decide whether to seek a recount.

Ed Gillespie said Jim Webb was leading Allen by about 7,000 votes this morning, or about .3 percent of the total votes cast. He said that could change during the official canvas that is starting today in localities around the state. He said it is likely some vote totals will change as mistakes in tabulating totals are discovered....

"We'll want to see how the canvassing turns out" before deciding on whether to ask for a recount, he said.

It seems likely that the Allen camp has come to terms with the fact that a recount would almost certainly fail to overturn Webb's current 7,000-vote lead, and Allen probably won't ask for one unless the numbers shift substantially in Allen's favor. In other words, game's almost over -- Dems look like they're about to take the Senate, too. Or, as Webb put it late yesterday, "the votes are in, and we won."
