In a beautiful display of irony, NBC has decided to censor ads for the movie, Shut Up & Sing, which is about the censorship of the Dixie Chicks. The movie documents the incredible abuse the group received after the lead singer criticized George W. Bush at a concert in 2003.
"[NBC] cannot accept these spots as they are disparaging to President Bush." - NBC's letter to the Dixie Chicks.
Well done, NBC. And in response I would like to give you a statement made by a gentleman named Benito Mussolini:
"Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power."
NBCs actions are pathetic. Harvey Weinstein, the producer of the movie, issued his own statement about the networks decision:
It's a sad commentary about the level of fear in our society that a movie about a group of courageous entertainers who were blacklisted for exercising their right of free speech is now itself being blacklisted by corporate America. The idea that anyone should be penalized for criticizing the president is profoundly un-American."
Here's a longer version of the trailer NBC refused to air:
This is another great sign about the future of our country.
What is so disparaging about Bush in that commercial? They've taken actual footage of the President and used it to make a point. I could see this as a valid argument if they changed something, like turning Bush into a insane looking caricature.
What is wrong with that commercial? Can you not be a republican/Bush supporter/conservative/country music fan and also let something challenge and explore the post 9/11 of the past five years? It's the ultimate hypocrisy, when these right-wingers say that we need to be in Iraq to fight for freedom in Iraq, but fail to fight for free speech at home.
There is only so much Frequency Spectrum available. It belongs to the public, to everybody, not the government or the media. When an sensible ad like this is censored, when there is not even any nudity or offensive language in it, that is what truly sickens me, not because the Dixie Chicks are "beating a dead horse". If you don't like what they're selling, don't go see the movie. I didn't go see Larry the Cable Guy, but I had all those ads put it in my face and that was more offensive to me than the Dixie Chicks.

So, basically, the dixie chicks are trying to revive thier dead careers by beating a dead horse. Guess what? That was years ago, and the aveage american has an attention span worse than a 6 year old with ADHD who just ran out of ritalin. They need to get over it, realize that they are to blame for the bullshit, and go home. Nobody cares.
I'm only doing this because it I've seen it around the boards recently and I'll do anything to seem hip.

Where was it that they made those comments? Was it here on US soil, or was it in a foreign country? I can't seem to remember......
I'm not sure because I thought the story was boring when it first aired in the media....but for some reason I think it was in the UK.
[EDIT] I just looked it up...London, England in 2003.

People stopped buying their CDs, and even got rid of the Dixie Chicks CDs they already had. Radio stations did stop playing their songs, but was that from politically motivated or commercially motivated? It was primarily commerically motivated as the stations did not want to lose listeners. Those listeners motivations may have been political, but were they restrained from talking? Were they denied a forum? No. The Chicks had forums all over the place to express their views. They made a choice according to their rights to free speech. They were in the business of selling their music and they insulted their fan base. It was stupid. Of course they lost money.
They miscontrued the meaning of censorship to mean "People aren't buying our music anymore therefore we are being censored." I'm all for the Chicks speaking their mind (although I disagree with the venue in which they did it as domestic politics should stop at the water's edge) and I'm all for them trying to make a living. But it was not smart for them to make the comments they made, and then tried to blame their poor sales and the backlash on censorship. It's a free market society, and that goes for speech as well. If people don't like your music they won't buy it. If people don't like you, they won't buy it either. This helps to keep the fringes on both ends of the spectrum down. You can say whatever you want but just people don't like it or don't like you because of it isn't censorship.

You guys never seem to grasp how obvious it is when you haven't actually read what you're responding to.

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."
