Mom Sues Coors Over Son's Death

SUNDAY APRIL 18 2004 10:45 PM

Submitted by BatAttaK. Edited By Michael_J_Totten.

In another "everyone is responsible other than me" lawsuit a mother of a 19-year-old man killed in a car accident is suing Coors Brewing Company. The lawsuit alleges that "Coors has failed in its duty to protect the country's youth from drinking."

Also named in the lawsuit were the man's girlfriend and her mother. The lawsuit alleges his girlfriend allowed the him to drive off in her car, given to her by her mother, even though he didn't have a license.

Whatever happened to personal responsility in this country? Since when is a beer manufacturer supposed to be a proxy parent?

I'm all for the average person using the legal system to curb big corporations. It's the American way.

Prior to the big tobacco lawsuits from years ago any kid could go into a store and buy cigarettes. I remember when I was 10 years old my dad could send me to the store to buy him cigarettes. Now, at 23 years old, I get carded for cigarettes. I don't know how it is in other parts of the country, but in NYC it is near impossible to find a store that will sell you cigarettes without an ID. Not that kids can't find other ways to get them and not that it has stopped all of them from smoking, but sometimes these suits can make some sort of a difference.

Oh for crying out fucking loud.

Her son was drinking and driving. Period. He's a moron, and that's not the fault of the girlfriend, her mother, or the Coors Brewing Company.

It's also not the mother's fault. Even if she told him, "Don't drink until you're 21, and don't EVER drink and drive," every day, it was still his stupid ass that grabbed the keys and got behind the wheel.

It's a shame, but it's nobody's fault but his own. Nobody forced him to drink, and nobody forced him to drive. Period.

Hmmm...well, I guess she has some standing under Dram Shop Liability, but I think it's a stretch. I'm no lawyer, but it's my understanding that this type of liability is upheld with the intent of bringing suit against those who put the drink in the hand of a person who is injured. On the other hand, liquor companies are almost as bad as tobacco companies at targeting minors. I wonder how this one will turn out.

Exactly,

Personal responsibilty is key. Coors didn't shove the beer down his throat and give him the keys to a car. It's not unknown the drinking and driving are hidious befellows.

He drank, he drove, he fucked up, he's dead. End of story

That's so fucking stupid that she can sue Coors. What the fuck did they do, other than market the beer? How about she find out where he GOT the alcohol, and sue THEM for contributing to a minor. COORS can do nothing about their distributors. What, should they have a representative in every single super-market, or gas station, to make sure they don't sell Coors to minors? Gimme a fuckin break. And, suggesting for a moment that some responsibility lies with the girlfriend, how can it be seen that it's her MOTHER'S fault for allowing her daughter to have a car? "Well, while my son is going out with your daughter, she's not allowed to have a car." Some people should be FUCKING SHOT!

*cough*

I hate stupid people. I really do.

hey they should take the "suing" mother and put her in a COORS race car and make her swerve into her own pole. Even if you are ALLOWED to sue over an issue like this, its the standard stupid ass American who takes advantage. Sure there corperate, lots of $$,blah blah blah. I dont give a fuck if theres a hip dude on a commerical with his arm around a hot blonde and playing darts with his bros & beers. Beer is for people fuckin 21 years old + UP. The kid knew that. His fault. YOUR KID WAS STUPID LADY. Someone should sue HER for her existance.

It's the lawsuit lottery, the replacement for the 'work hard and you'll suceed' aspect of the American dream

abruptly shifting gears

i've been in europe for quite a while in a place where the buying age is 16 and the age, cost, and training to get a drivers license is higher than in the states.

I've always been of the opinion that making something forbidden just makes people want to do it more. would it make any difference at all to have the drinking age before the driving age instead of the other way around?

I feel bad that the last thing he drank was Coors. That's really not the taste I would want in my mouth when I go.

Anyone can sue anyone for anything, technically. You can file a lawsuit and all that, but this woman knows she's not getting jack shit. What kind of lawyer would even take this up?
