What Is The Point In Having a Country Without Hooch and Whores?

Foreign troops and visitors are ruining Afghanistan, according to religious officials. They have brought in prostitution and alcohol but now the government is fighting back. Afghans are lining up for jobs in a new department of vice. The new department staff will monitor people for "correct" Islamic behavior.

President Karzai is one of the leaders of the new vice movement. According to the Washington Post, Karzai is being pressured by religious groups and is attempting to upstage the Taliban who are still active in the south.

The Taliban used to have a Department for the Promotion of Virtue and the Discouragement of Vice. It was their brutal branch of government known for whipping women for wearing socks that were not sufficiently opaque, showing skin or for not being accompanied by a close male relative on the streets. They stopped women from educating girls in home-based schools, working, and even begging. They also beat men for trimming their beards.

But government officials insist that any crackdown will not involve beating people or taking away their rights, but would be "educational" in nature. So far the police have destroyed thousands of bottles of alcohol. Under current laws, restaurants may only serve alcohol to foreigners, but not to locals. Police have also detained a number of suspected prostitutes, some of whom were deported back to China.

Recently the government sent 1,200 South Korean Christians back to South Korea, fearing their presence would offend Muslims. In March, a man who converted to Christianity was threatened with the death penalty but was allowed to flee to Italy after international protest. And in May, angry mobs vandalized several Chinese brothels.

More democracy in action.

Isn't prostitution still illegal in most parts of the world? Alcohol use is also restricted in certain parts of the U.S. as well, isn't it? And execution of people on bequest of the government, still happens in the west....

So yeah, sounds pretty much like modern democracy in action to me as well.

Oh yeah ... sure thing, That sounds very similar to the sort of modern democracy we have here in America.

Why just last week I reported my neighbor's wife because she went outside without wearing gloves. I will have to watch them closely and see if she might need to be "educated" on her status as a female. She reads a little too well for my comfort.

Well ... I gotta run. There is a hanging of a non-christian scheduled for noonish in the town square. Then I'm off to join in on the destruction of a local video store. Can you believe they had the balls to add an "adult" section?

Some citizens never learn.

I think my point was more to do with what democracy means; the rule by the people. No-one wants to see the Taliban back in power except the Taliban. I never mentioned womens rights, and I totally agree that the oppression of women that happened under the Taliban regime was barbaric. It is up to the people of Afghanistan, free from the Taliban, to decide which route to take and up to us to lead by example and persuade them that things such as womens rights, religious tolerance and freedom of expression are *a good thing*. I can think of many incidents over the last century where the Wests conduct can call into question whether we are a good role model...

So should a state launch a department to monitor and make sure that everybody adheres to "correct islamic behaviour" ??

Especially when the definition of correct and islamic are both pretty vague.

Do they mean correct islamic as in adhereing to wahabist sunni law ?
Or do they mean shia law of the systani school of thought?
Or maybe Sufist teachings?
Or a ghulat revival?

there is no way of definiing what correct islamic conduct is and therefor there is no way to make sure that they don't go back to beating/killing people for nothing .....

Why would that be surprising? Women of a hated enemy in a brothel, seems to be entirely in keeping with a society that dislikes women.

(BTW, "Paki" is offensive racist slang... just saying.)
