Charles Taylor, internationally most-wanted war criminal and former "president" of war torn Liberia, was captured earlier this year after he disappeared from his forced exile in Nigeria and has since been facing charges in The Hague for war crimes. Apparently the accomodations are not to his liking.
Attorney Karim Asad Ahmad Khan described The Hague jail regime as "far more draconian... than operates in Freetown", the capital of Sierra Leone.
He said Mr Taylor was locked in his cell for up to 16 hours a day and could not make as many phone calls as he was allowed in Sierra Leone.
He also complained that his client was forced to eat "Eurocentric" food.
Well that's just awful. Even inhumane, some would say. Of course, those people might not have much of a clue of what Taylor's legacy is, which includes a veritable laundry list of nastiness. Some of the more choice items include conscripting young children into his army and forcing them to fight wars for him, encouraging his troops to gang rape civilians, and chopping off the arms and legs of his opponents, and civilians caught in the crossfire. While being buddies with Pat Robertson is apparently not yet an internationally recognized war crime, it should be duly noted that he and Taylor were quite friendly, and Taylor gave diamond mining rights to Robertson in exchange for Robertson's political support. Ever hear of blood diamonds? These are some of the fuckers who are responsible.
So it wouldn't be a huge shock for most of the world if Taylor's impassioned plea for better food and a nicer room fall on deaf ears. I'd actually pay for the privelige of standing outside his cell door and making sure that he stays in there all day. And I'm guessing I'm not alone.
