For fans and detractors of Noam Chomsky, his new blog, Turning the Tide, just went live today. Add it to your bookmarks to enjoy his insights or to keep up with the enemy, depending on which way you lean.
If we had anything remotely resembling a democratic culture,
What a silly comment! That's the sort of thing a North Korean ought to say.
Our democracy isn't perfect by a long shot, but good lord, what a ridiculous exaggeration. I can't believe I used to take him seriously.
It's perfect enough to allow us to criticize it. Shortly after September 11 it began to look as if anyone who criticized our democracy was going to be labeled unpatriotic and thrown in jail. We still have PATRIOT(it's original name was Total Information Awareness, lest we forget) and i believe that some of it is well grounded in the short term.
No, Total Information Awareness is a DARPA data-mining project that would scan travel and credit card records, public records, internet mail, banking transactions, etc., for evidence of terrorist plots.
no way, i thought they were one in the same. how'd i get that idea? must be the damned liberal media forcing those damned liberal ideas into my head.

So, I guess he won't be talking about government and binding, or the minimalist program, or any fun stuff? Damn.
Why should he? His politics are far better substantiated than his linguistics.

For some reason, I disagree that the ability of a nation's citizens to discuss politics freely is the end all and be all of civilization. It's important, yes. But anyone who claims that our system is anywhere near fair or just must be thinking of a different United States.
the ability to freely discuss politics is also highly effective at keeping the status quo. every idea can be infinitely debated back and forth to death, until everyone is so confused by the end of it, that no one feels confident casting a vote for anything.
