"Camp Casey" Memorial Site Vandalized

At Camp Casey - the site of Cindy Sheehan's protest near President Bush's Crawford, Texas ranch - 800 crosses bearing the names of fallen soldiers line the road. Monday night, a number of those crosses were vandalized by a resident of nearby Waco.

Some 800 white wooden crosses, bearing the names of soldiers killed in Iraq like her son, have lined the road near the area where Sheehan has pitched a tent. Witnesses said they saw a truck dragging a pipe and chains drive over some of the crosses on Monday night.

Larry Northern, 46, of nearby Waco, Texas, was arrested and charged with criminal mischief in connection with the incident, Crawford Police Chief Donnie Tidmore said.

Northern is not the only Texas resident upset with Sheehan's protest - Sunday night, Bush neighbor Larry Mattlage fired shots in the air in his frustration. Mattlage claims he was preparing for "dove hunting" season.

Sheehan will be moving her camp to a nearby patch of land offered by a sympathetic Bush neighbor.

"A kind gentleman from down the road, closer to the Bush ranch, has offered us the use of his property," Sheehan told reporters.

"He offered it because he heard about the shots fired at us the other day and he didn't think that was right," she said. "He happens to be the third cousin of the person that fired the shots and so he came down and he said he supports us 100percent."

The move by Sheehan, expected this week, could help ease growing friction with local residents, some of whom are seeking a ban on parking and camping along the country road where she has pitched her tent.

Sheehan is now on her 10th day of the vigil.

It boggles my mind that people would disagree that strongly with someone who is merely pointing out that people have died. Do they disagree that soldiers have died, or that it is sad? I just don't understand what the anti-demonstrators are thinking.

It's even more sad that I bet the person who *desecrated a memorial to fallen soldiers* most likely not only supports the war, but is the type who would blast anyone who didn't "support our troops". Way to support the troops, buddy... what's next? Piss on their graves?

what bothers the rabid right wingers so much about Cindy Sheehan and the memorials is that they aren't overtly political, but that they are the mirror held up to all of BushCo's lies. Simply asking why her son is dead, and not tolerating any of the bullshit responses, shows that there really is no reason, and they're all a pack of lying dogs.

Texas, huh? Let the bashing begin again.

It's not unusual to have memorials for an on-going war being destroyed. Just think back to Vietnam and all the shit that happened then. Regardless, it's a fucking stupid thing to do (destroy memorials), regardless of your opinion on the war. It's always so sad when non-violent protest ends in violence because of morons. I'm glad the guy was arrested.

Well, the Westboro Baptist Church protests soldiers' funerals praising the roadside mines that killed them, so yeah, these people are fucked up.

MisterDionysos I CALL BULLSHIT. If that isnt political why are there people all over and media coverage. I dont mind a good protest and complaints, even if I am for the war. Just dont try to tell me this isnt political.

What happened when one of my best friends commards died, and his family said they support the war? NOT SHIT a small article in the news. They didnt go run around calling CNN getting people to have a sit in. The media didnt care because it wasnt rotten eggs on the administration.

You think this is such a atrocity by "rabid right wingers" then why the hell are a whole bunch of left wingers milking it for all its worth?

Your one sided look at this is disgusting as much as it is sad someone had to loose there child for any reason.

Beacause Keith missed the other gentalmens comments.

Just a note for future commenters who may be reading comprehension challenged -- the memorials were placed by the anti-war protesters. The guy who destroyed the memorials is for the war.

Yeah, right. Ohio's just as fucked up as the rest of the union. Just read the article thefreak linked to up a few posts. Where did that happen...

Yeah. The "Heart of it All."

Anyways, I was just pointing out that people are going to start bashing Texas again because of this, just like they did in the other news article I linked to. I was not implying that Texas should be bashed.

Actually, the link is to the church's website, which everyone w/half a brain should find absofuckinglutely REPUGNANT. They have pictures of KIDS NO OLDER THAN 7 OR 8 wearing shirts that say "God Hates Fags". mad

I'd rather bash THEM.

And as for Texas-bashing, it happens everywhere. New Yorkers are assholes, Massholes are pinko commies, Texans are stupid rednecks. It happens. Doesn't make it right though. We, as members of SG, should shirk these stereotypes and come together......

.....and bash New Jersey. wink (kidding)

You're right, but an article I found off the church's website talks about protesters outside of funerals for fallen soldiers, holding up signs that say:

Which, among other places I assume, happened right here in Ohio.

The Church also supports the uses of signs saying, "Thank God for 9/11" "God Sent the Tsunami" and they propose the use of the death sentence for anyone found guilty of homosexuality.

Apparently, the irony is lost upon them.

EDIT: here's a link to the article, again.
