Uematsu to Leave Square Enix?

MONDAY NOVEMBER 1 2004 1:00 PM

The gaming world waits with bated breath following RPGamer.com's report that rumors Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu may leave Square Enix to found his own company.

His recent busy schedule, which consisted of activities spent with his rock band The Black Mages, as well as being responsible for composing music for Hanjuku Eiyuu Tai 3D and Final Fantasy XII, is reported to be the catalyst for his decision.

The article reassures that should this occur, it does not necessarily mean Uematsu will no longer produce music for Square Enix. Though a busy schedule of creating material for Final Fantasy games is a reason for his possible departure, one would assume he's perhaps trying to get away from Final Fantasy games altogether. The real hope at this point is that it's just a rumor.

his soundtracks have been going downhill steadly for a few years now, and it has nothing to do with him, square enix have been trying to get more and more music with less and less devolpment time, can't say i'm surprised he might leave.

*gasp* eeek eeek eeek

I'll die, I swear. I'll fucking die.

BTW, mokole, another reason for the decline is that he hasn't done as much composing. X and XI were done with another composer.

Still great sndrks though.

That would suck. And as for "his soundtracks are going downhill", he hasn't done a full score by himself in, but the tracks he contributed to FFXI are some of the best ever. Oh, Nobuo..

The "graduation" analogy seems more apt than, "I'm leaving S/E and never coming back." He's not saying he won't working with S/E in the future, just that he's going to pursue other creative directions, as well. If anything, this is good news - it means we're likely to get more of his work in a shorter amount of time.

If you'll excuse me, I have to listen to some kickass music now. biggrin

Well, I tend to be skeptical of any story that appears first on RPGamer, since they tend not to be a credible source. If it's something that's confirmed by other sites/mags, then ok, but who knows where they got that information. They're quick to post whatever comes their way without doing any cross-referencing.

In either case, it says his departure doesn't mean that he'll stop doing music for Final Fantasy. So I don't think this is such a big deal...

Nobuo Uematsu not doing music for Final Fantasy games would be like John Williams not doing music for Star Wars movies. It just wouldn't be the same, and only half as good a product surreal

Too true. His music is 9/10s of the emotion in the cutscenes.

Damn that sucks. His work on FFIII/VI was absofuckinglutely phenomenal. My friend Akira sent me the entire soundtrack to that game via IM. I put my favorites from it on CD and it's been in pretty heavy rotation in my car and on my ipod. I didn't know he had a band! I have to chek it out.
