I've always been a sucker for chick musicians. Maybe it's the fact that I am one myself, but lately there seems to be a surge of sexy, guitar-playing, piano-jammin' female songwriters on the music scene.

First, 22-year-old Alison Sudol of A Fine Frenzy. Several months ago, when I first heard this band, I was mesmerized. The music from its debut album, One Cell In The Sea is haunting and hypnotic, with influences including Sigur Ros, Ella Fitzgerald and Radiohead. This sexy lady (see below) taught herself to play piano and her narrative songwriting shows in almost every one of her melodic songs.

Haven't heard the fantastic band yet? Play the video of A Fine Frenzy's "Almost Lover" on VH1's Unplugged.

Other fantastic singer-songwriter chicks include Scottish-singer KT Tunstall, who recently released her sophomore album, Drastic Fantastic. It doesn't disappoint. The album is filled with flawless pop hits, but her edgy sound adds a unique twist. Many of the songs are intimate and personal, most of them ballads, including "Saving My Face" which is about a 50-year-old woman trying to look like a teenager. The title of the album, Tunstall said, was inspired by the movie Sin City. On her myspace, she states how, "Doing this for a living is such a comic-book existence...'Drastic Fantastic' sounded like the name of my comic-book life."

Another newly released album, Rilo Kiley's Under the Blacklight, may raise some eyebrows of hard-core fans, but personally, I enjoy the "new" sound of Rilo Kiley. Sure, "The Moneymaker," doesn't sound anything like older Rilo Kiley songs, but it grew on me. That, and Jenny Lewis is sexy as hell and I don't think I could dislike anything she does. Just watch the below video to see for yourself:

Whether we believe the album is a disaster or not, I hope we can all admit Jenny Lewis is a beautiful, beautiful woman.

That Fine Frenzy girl is a female James Blunt. Don't lump her in with Rilo Kiley. The new Rilo Kiley album is awesome but I wouldn't call it a singer-songwriter record at all. It's a full production pop album.

Isn't this woman synonymous with the "chick singer-songwriter"? She even has an album coming out next week.

But I'm definitely going to check out the musicians in this post.

Way to judge a book by its cover. Cliche yes, but fitting. So you don't go for the punky trashy band look. So what? You automatically think, "thats shitty so their music must be shitty!" I'm a strong believer in "Listen to what you want". If the music the band plays is not your cup o' tea, fine, thats your opinion and you are entitled to it, but by automatically assuming that they are shitty judging by two pics, you belittle the band and the person who posted. That's a band that guy is into, so he must be shitty for liking it right? Or at least his tastes must be shitty.

I'm all for peoples opinions and view points, but at least justify it with some actual critique, not generalizations.

The way that a band presents itself is a MAJOR element in their overall identity. Why do you think most great acts spend tons of energy and money on things like stage design, lighting, videos, artwork, etc.? The way you look says alot about your artistic sensibilities and your vision.
