Day of Silence for Internet Radio

Fans of Internet radio take note. On June 26 Internet broadcasters will observe a full day of silence in protest of the Copyright Royalty Board's royalty increase scheduled for implementation July 15th.

The day of silence is aimed at showing their listeners and the community at large what it will sound like after the ruling. With the royalty increase exceeding 100 percent of most webcasters' total revenues, the majority of stations would be forced to shut down if the ruling is enforced.

The last time such a silence tactic was used back in 2002 Congress passed the Small Webcaster Settlement Act, effectively sparing small webcasters certain death in the face of royalty rates they couldn’t possibly afford. Now, with the new planned royalty rate hike, bigger broadcasters are getting involved.

KCRW will produce "D-Day For Webcasters," a one-hour program with members of Pandora, Live 365, Yahoo! and BAGeL Radio joining KCRW general manager Ruth Seymour to discuss the effect of the new rates.

People who don’t want to see their favorite 56 kbps specialty station disappear forever should contact savenetradio.org. (At the time of this writing the site was temporarily down for maintenance.)

I am a big listener and supporter of many radio stations, including di.fm , and chronix radio. i would really hate to lose these stations, and i have personally wrote to my local representatives. ive seen this coming for months, and have dreaded every day leading up to it. i urge not only frequent listners of interenet radio, but also ANYONE who has EVER flipped by a radio station, to offer their support to this movement. please visit SaveNetRadio

How does any government even enforce laws on internet radio? What's stopping them from moving their servers across borders?

Isn't internet radio a contradiction of terms? And satellite radio for that matter?

Does anyone actually listen to internet radio? What is it, exactly, for that matter? I'm blessed to live in a city with actual good FM stations.
