Roger Daltrey Calls Live Earth Shows 'Bollocks'

Man, it seemed that most if not all of us could agree that Al Gore was doing a pretty cool thing with his upcoming Live Earth concerts, but count Who frontman Roger Daltrey out of the back-patting party.

In a recent conversation with British tabloid The Sun, Daltrey wasn't shy about sharing his view that the event is a load of shit.

"Bollocks to that! The last thing the planet needs is a rock concert. I can't believe it. Let's burn even more fuel. We have problems with global warming, but the questions and the answers are so huge I don't know what a rock concert's ever going to do to help. Everybody on this planet at the moment, unless they are living in the deepest rainforest in Brazil, knows about climate change.”

Fair enough. At least Roger doesn't mince words. So what does the singer propose we do to remedy our environmental woes?

"My answer is to burn all the fucking oil as quick as possible and then the politicians will have to find a solution.”

Surprisingly, noted humanitarian Sir Bob Geldof seems to agree with Daltrey. Last week he more or less told the press the same thing, noting that "we are all fucking conscious of global warming." No love for Al, I suppose. A spokesperson for the event came to Mr. Gore's defense, reminding the Brits that people "are aware of global warming but millions are not doing anything about changing their lifestyles.”

Judge for yourself on July 7, when Live Earth take place at various venues around the world.

Ozone in the air is a bad thing. It's a polutant and bad for your health
The ozone layer in the upper atmosphere, however, is a good thing. It protects us from the sun's ultraviolet rays. And a good chunk of it is gone - forever.

Here's another thing to keep in mind about Roger -

The Who were the original masters of music acts planting inflammatory statements in the press in order to create a stir. Originally these comments were crafted by themselves and their management simply in order to get noticed. It was part of their 'shock and awe' assault and worked quite to their advantage in the squeaky clean mid-60's. Pete Townshend later became a master of this technique, and later finessed it into an art form featuring contradictory statements about the origins of songs, his political and social views, etc. Yet another way The Who highly influenced the punk movement.

Daltrey was a street tough from Shepherd's Bush who never really gave a damn about what anyone thought of him, and settled his disagreements with his fists well into his forties. I doubt that his statement isn't sour grapes or a well-planned scheme, nor a concoction to sell concert tickets. Just another pissed off guy speaking his mind, but knowing he'll create a ruckus by doing so.
