New Order Calls It Quits

Tags: New Order

Earlier in the week, New Order bassist Peter Hook hinted to XFM that he, Bernard Sumner, and Stephen Morris were ready to call it a day.

XFM: "Is New Order over now?"
Hook: "Well, Yeah, me and Bernard aren't working together"

Now the rumours can be put to rest, as Hook has announced through more "official" channels (i.e. his Myspace page) that New Order has officially ended its 27 year exsistance.

"...it was the interview with clint boon that started it all off... I went on and ... mentioned the [New Order] split so i suppose because it was me sayin it... it was out at last. im relieved... really hated carryin on as normal with an awful secret... so lets move on shall we?"

So that's it, kids. 27 years ends with a flip Myspace post.

New Order's final output will be the score for the forthcoming Ian Curtis biopic, Control, which premieres at the Cannes Film Festival on May 17.

Meanwhile, Hook is busy gearing up his new super-group, Freebass, with The Smiths' Andy Rourke and Stone Roses' Mani. The band is collaborating with a series of guest vocalists, including Oasis's Liam Gallagher, The Charlatans' Tim Burgess, The Stone Roses' Ian Brown and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie.

Recommended Viewing:
New Order in their prime, "Blue Moday" live in Barcelona, circa 1984.

I'm so glad I was able to see them at Coachella in 2005, they are amazing! The first song they played was Atmosphere, not a New Order track, but still so so special!!

They had a great run. They can enjoy their millions. The last album wasn't so great anyway.

This is very full circle--starting a band 27 years ago because a man killed himself, and ending the band on a soundtrack for a movie about the guy. Isn't 27 like the ultimate astrological number as well? Every 27 years the planets realign to exactly where they were-- 27 years ago. Hmm.

I am a fan. Always will be. I thought Regret was brilliant, too. Joy Division, New Order, top notch. I bought the JD box set the day it came out. This news will just make New Order more popular than ever. When I was 17 and discovered Joy Division, in 1982, these guys got me. I'm still there, fuck it. The only downside is that alot of their music is so overplayed that when it gets rocked on the dancefloor, its, um, like time time to buy a drink, know what i mean?null

Few bands are successful once, let alone twice, especially after the loss of such a key element of the original band chemistry. They should be proud of their career. I never cared for them, but they're certainly to be respected.

actually that's just saturn that returns every 27 years, but it's usually considered a big deal anyway.

Hey now - what you doin'?
Don't go down the road to ruin
Look back at where you came from
Count to ten before you go wrong

You have the brightest future
writing songs on your computer
but you couldn't walk the extra mile
and now your life is running wild...
