BBC Radio 2 Attempts to Recreate an All-Time Classic

It's 2007 and this June will mark the 40th anniversary of the album that tops many Best of All Time lists: the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band. Of course I can go on and on about how the album is flawless, important and go into a pile of appropriate superlatives for paragraphs on end, but do we really need more of that? The album is timeless and great. Fine.

In a move that Pitchfork may be justifably calling "ill-advised," BBC Radio 2 is assembling thirteen bands and ushering them into the studio to cover each song from the landmark album. The Beatles' original recording equipment will be used and Beatles engineer Geoff Emerick will man the boards.

For some that may be enough to cause massive douche-chills, others would still like to know who will be involved. Are you sitting down? Bands confirmed so far include Oasis, The Killers, Travis, the Fratellis, Kaiser Chiefs, Razorlight and James Morrison. The BBC will air the resulting material on June 2, one day after Sgt. Pepper's original release date. Make sure you tune in, or smash your radio; it's all the same in the end.

having never heard a single band listed nor having heard a single song on this supposedly classic album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band I can honestly say this sounds like a great idea. smile

Honestly, I swear the above is true, and my real opinion.

"nor having heard a single song on this supposedly classic album'

You've never heard "With a Little Help From My Friends", "When I'm 64", or "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"? Have you been living in a cave far from any radio or supermarket for your entire life?

It's not a terrible idea, but that's a stinky list of bands. They only need to add James Blunt and Coldplay to get the dreary-o-meter to reach maximum.

The NME did this exact same thing in 1987! At least it was apt when they did it -

"it was twenty years ago today..." etc

Plus the NME version had Sonic Youth, The Fall, The Wedding Present, Billy Bragg

Proper artists!

Sgt.Pepper Knew My Father
SY doing "Within You Without You" was the only decent thing on it as far as I remember.

The fucking Killers? WTF?!?!? The Killers shouldn't even be spoken in the same breath as the Beatles, for fucks sake. Excuse me, while I go find someone to bludgeon into a bloody heap.

Ugh. I'm agreeing with Pitchfork!

And the guy who want Oasis to die. This isn't ripping off NME so mush as the Bee Gee's. Terrible. Those who don't learn the past, etc. FACT: There has never been a decent tribute comp to anyone, anywhere, ever. They are always loaded with majority crap bands and/or performances.
