Death Cab Who? Ben Gibbard Goes Solo

Everyone knows that touring with a band that sells tons of records is so last year. What's the point of that when you can ditch the rest of the guys, go solo, score all the chicks, make all the money and get around to that "band" crap later on?

Just ask Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service. Tired of all the sharing and caring that comes with leading two pop groups to glory, Gibbard's announced that he will be touring on his own this spring. No Postal Service. No Death Cabs (lots of cuties). Just Ben, his glasses and a guitar.

Don't forget that this year you'll also be able to catch Mr. Gibbard on the silver screen in the film adaptation of David Foster Wallace's Brief Interviews With Hideous Men. No release date is set for the film yet, but that's something you can ask Ben about when you see him play in May.

All shows with David Bazan and Jonathan Rice supporting:

05-03 Minneapolis, MN - First Avenue
05-04 Chicago, IL - Metro
05-05 Detroit, MI - Majestic Theatre
05-07 Somerville, MA - Somerville Theatre
05-08 New York, NY - Town Hall
05-09 Philadelphia, PA - Theatre of Living Arts
05-10 Washington, DC - 9:30 Club
05-11 Carrboro, NC - Cat's Cradle
05-12 Atlanta, GA - Center Stage
05-13 Nashville, TN - City Hall
05-14 Dallas, TX - Granada Theater
05-15 Austin, TX - Emo's
05-17 Los Angeles, CA - Royce Hall
05-18 San Francisco, CA - Fillmore
05-19 Portland, OR - Roseland Theater
05-20 Seattle, WA - Showbox

hahahahah selling out. FYI - He was doing this before DCFC were together, and has been doing solo shows for the better part of a decade while they've been together.

If he's been doing it the whole time, does that really make him a sell out?

plus selling out would be for the money. maybe he just feels he can be more expressive by himself.

Death cab for cutie, eh the whole pop scene, just sucks anyways. I think it would be good to get some new blood into the scene.

Not to be a prick, but you're pretty out of it if you don't realize that Death Cab is already a really popular band, and the Postal Service isn't doing too shabby either. I think your concern that he'll somehow garner more success solo and overshadow his band is somewhat unfounded. As other people have pointed out, he's been doing solo shows for a while, and he's already got solo stuff released on CD.

Also, this is perhaps an unfair thing to say about his bandmates, who I feel are all quite talented musicians, but doesn't the term "Ben Gibbard solo" seem redundant to anyone else? My understanding is that Death Cab started out as a solo project back in the early days. Correct me if I'm wrong.

somehow I felt like this was going to happen.

for anyone who's interested, he put out a split EP with Andrew Kenny (from the American Analog Set) entitled Home: Volume 5 which is a really beautiful record if you're into acoustic songs.

i see a few of you know what's going on.. but most of you are hurting my head. SO FUCKING WHAT?! people in established bands do solo tours all the time (can you say dan and matt of alk3?) he's just doing a solo tour.. dcfc isn't breaking up, and he isn't putting postal service by the wayside either.. just go to the show and enjoy his musical stylings (plus he does some acoustic death cab songs too most of the time).

He is not selling out. When Postal Service first parted he started a solo project, Death Cab. Death Cab got too popular and difficult to manage on his own after a while so he acquired band mates. He originally wanted a solo project.

Are you being serious? I really hope you're being sarcastic. Selling out is the most redundant phrase ever.

I can't wait to hear about this and see some videos popping up. If only I were moving a week earlier and I could catch the show in Seattle.
