Interpol Talks New 'Atmospheric' LP

Interpol guitarist/songwriter Dan Kessler talked to BBC 6 last week about the band's forthcoming yet-to-be-titled follow-up to 2004's Antics.

Kessler reports that the band enjoyed experimenting during the sessions for its third LP and let the guitars take a lessened role.

"With this record, I think, anything goes. We're a lot more open. It sounds like Interpol. It sounds like our tunes, but there's a lot more atmosphere and sound in general, rather than just filling it up with guitars all the time."

The new album is due out in June via the band's recently inked deal with Capitol Records. The NYC art rockers made the jump to the majors from its former indie home at Matador Records this past summer. The descison came after Interpol joined forces with 3D Management, the company that also handles Coldplay's business affairs.

Interpol is currently in the UK finishing final mixes for the new album.

Cool, I was just listening to Interpol on the way home from work tonight, wondering if they were doing anything new yet or not. Cool to see that they are.

It's average. You have to understand the band did promotions as soon as the last lp came out, then went on tour for over a year. I'm sure they needed a bit of a break after that. And then to get back in the studio and write an albums worth of good material doesn't just take two months. It can easily take up to another year.
