With most people over eighteen years old already hating on Pete Wentz and Fall Out Boy, Pete may as well add some fuel to the fire himself. According to a story on Punknews.org, Wentz recently spoke to the press about the band's forthcoming album, Infinity On High, leaking to the internet.
While throwing around such dramatic words as "devastating", Pete took a moment to hypothesize that the common working class slob is to blame for such a tragic occurrence.
Our job is to put out records and tour and make music. What are we gonna do? Sit at the plant and watch everybody? Some guy working minimum wage, why would he care how it affects us? It's a multi-pronged thing."
This could be the worst leak in the history in music, f you think that every year computers, iPod, internet music grows exponentially and we're probably one of the biggest bands in rock music on the internet.
There are many ways to take "worst leak in the history of music". I'll let you guys decide how we should interpret that. I also like the idea that there is a mysterious minimum-wage slave armed with a laptop ready to pull a CD off the press and get it on the internet as soon as possible. That will show those rich folk! The absurdity of Pete's bravado didn't escape Rolling Stone, who explained The Five Stages of Post-Album Leak Grief:
1. DENIAL: Pete pretends he doesnt care how the leak will effect chart position: Its gotten to the point where Im like, who really cares about the first week (sales)? If people like the music then they like the music. Thats the best thing about it. Theres been a positive response.
2. ANGER: Pete lashes out at the working man: Our job is to put out records and tour and make music. What are we gonna do? Sit at the plant [he believes the leak began at the labels manufacturing plant] and watch everybody? Some guy working minimum wage, why would he care how it affects us? Its a multi-pronged thing.
3. BARGAINING: Pete begs us to help him weave a silver lining: If youve downloaded a song- cause we know alot of you hxc fob have. please tkae a moment and pick a friend and give them their first chance to listen to fall out boy. someone who would never expect to like it. convince them. you are fall out boy for that 3 minutes and 52 seconds. keep being our ambassadors. we will keep telling dudes in suits to chill out.
4. DEPRESSION: Pete wallows: Our new record has leaked. While this isnt the end of the world it certainly feels pretty terrible. As an artist we have a vision for how we want our record to be presented and this isnt it.
4 1/2. SELF-AGGRANDIZEMENT: Wentz is an artist and sometimes he invents things, including new stages of grief. He boasts: This could potentially be one of the biggest leaks there is. If you think that every year computers, iPod, internet music grows exponentially and were probably one of the biggest bands in rock music on the internet.
5. ACCEPTANCE: This is the last, elusive stage. Will he ever get here?
When you sell one zillion records and even Rolling Stone treats you like a dumbass, you may want to stop and think about your next move. Welcome to 2007, Pete.
