Nick Cave Back as Grinderman

Nick Cave is back without the Bad Seeds. Formerly running with the name The Mini Seeds, the band has grown into Grinderman and consists of Nick Cave, Martyn Casey (The Triffids), Warren Ellis (Dirty Three, The Bad Seeds) and Jim Sclavunous (The Cramps).

The band describe themselves as:

...Foul-mouthed, noisy, hairy, and damn well old enough to know better.

The band's debut comes with a release on March 5th, followed by performance at the All Tomorrow's Parties Festival in the UK this April. Of the recording, Casey told the NME:

Casey said: "It wasn't consciously two fingers to maturity but I remember thinking, all the way through, 'This isn't bad for a bunch of old farts.'"

Cave added: "We're just searching for a bit of freedom."

If their first single is the least bit autobiographical, for Nick freedom equals pussy, and he speaks for aging men who agree. "No Pussy Blues," now streaming at the Grinderman myspace site, chronicles an aging rock musician's frustrations with a younger lady's lack of interest. By the end, you really do feel bad for him. You think, come on lady, what's a guy gotta do? He's not hanging out with you because you guys have so much in common.

Jim Sclavunos's side project -- the Vanity Set, released a new single on vinyl that has an obscure lullaby by Cave called Sheep May Safely Graze. I have the 2003 cd of the Vanity set and it's a mix between circus oompaloompah, lounge and no wave. Basiaclly, it's an acquired taste but i love it now.

I think I follow Nick and his bad seeds too closely. it's a little obsession of mine.

When I saw him in Antwerp last September, he seemed very excited about this. He even made the audience repeat the name of the band out loud a couple of times, to make sure we'd remember.
