Last year, experimental music duo FM3 released a device called the Buddha Machine, which is essentially a small, low-fi juke box that plays nine different ambient loops. Literally, you switch the machine on, set it down and it will play one of the pre-programmed loops until you either turn it off or change what it's playing.
Seeing as people like Brian Eno and Thomas Fehlmann were buying these things en masse, it was only a matter of time before their incorporation into music production became publicized.
The Berlin-based label Staubgold has put together a compilation featuring various artists composing tracks with the Buddha Machine. Experimental madness or simply a 15-track advertisement? You decide. With a lineup that includes artists as diverse as Sunn0))), Jan Jelinek and Einsturzende Neubauten's Blixa Bargeld, the comp is at least intriguing. Jukebox Buddha will be available on November 7.
