Are They For or Against Me!

Against Me! are currently working on their major label debut with producer Butch Vig in Los Angeles. In the meantime, every week, they will answer one question from their fans by posting homemade videos on their Myspace page.

This week’s answer is to Jenni, who worries that despite the band's quest for anarchy, they seem to be selling out...

Now I can't wait for next weeks question! Hell, I can't wait for the next album!

Thanks you, fellas, for reminding me why you were/are ever after my favorite band.

Just, you know, don't let this new one suck.

It's hard to imagine them putting out a bad album, but that's what I thought about PGMG.

wayne's world! not quite as brilliant as wayne and garth, but its pretty amazing seeing the guys that made reinventing axl rose mimic brilliance.
by the way- their last album, "searching for a former clarity," was a total let down. if this new one is in the same vain, im going to be pretty dissapointed. no presure!

Yeah, I really really wish they'd get back to RAR lo-fi folky brilliance.

I really like Searching For a Former Clarity as an album. Slightly less so as an Against Me! album. If that makes any sense...

that didnt answer anything. all they did was re-enact waynes world. i used to kind of like this band, but not so much these days. this selling out thing isnt really helping my faith either.

You can tell they're not sell outs because sell outs could afford a better camera and editing suite.

I've known these guys for years and they deserve all that that have at the moment.. when they first starting getting attention & heavily touring from the No Idea release, even GVL locals started the whole "selling out" bullshit routine that's been thrown around since the 90's.....Against Me! has had the major labels courting them for years, but spent all those years constantly touring (and I do mean constantly) everywhere they could, building a fan base the honest way: by rocking motherfuckers in person and meeting people, making friends..
Taking a job anywhere is "selling out" by these stringent standards... working in restaurants, offices, the mall, the book store, wherever - if yr not working for yrself this is "selling out" according the idealistic punk notion... and how the fuck does anarchy have anything to do with that? They're not recording songs for the government! (though that would be fucking awesome, because many governments have public and arts funds for supporting the artists in their countries; painters, writers, musicians, etc.. the Canadian government has funded many of the better indie releases these past few years)
Okay, I'm getting long-winded and off the subject here....
I grew up like most of us that are a part of this site probably grew up: listening to punk rock and having most of the DIY ideals shape and/or mirror a lot of my core values. I have called bands "sell outs" in the past, but usually I realized I was just getting angry that some band that I thought was mine and a little secret was being discovered by many people. If the bands/artists that I love are able to get to more people and affect their lives in a positive manner like they did mine, how can that be wrong? I started playing in bands when I was 15 because of all the bands and books that helped me realize I wasn't alone in my belief system and I wanted to help spread that around... If some 12 yr old hears Against Me! on the radio at some point and gets into them, finds the bands that informed them and gets into them, then we have another kid growing up like us (that's a good thing). How many of us starting listening to Crass right away, huh? I'll bet Green Day & Rancid had a lot more to do with getting tons of us into all the other great bands that we love...
Alright, I gotta shut-up.

XOXO
-L

P.S.
The Clash, Ramones, Sex Pistols, The Replacements, Wire (and on and on) > all on major labels at some point or another, yet somehow the message and the music is what stays around - not who paid to put the record out....

I have total faith that this album will be good. I don't think they know how to put out shitty music.
But I agree with Flux about wanting them to get back to their "lo-fi folky brilliance"
