Laibach Gives Global Anthems a Twist

Remember those days in grade school when it was mandatory to sing the national anthem? Neither do I, but if that drearily-sentimental anthem had had a twist of cold-metallic industrial flavor, some experimental flares, a mechanical sting and echoing voices whispering interludes of stunning greatness--it would’ve been a little something like Volk. Hell, it might even have inspired me to stop selling my mother’s whiskey to my classmates and find something more productive to do with my time.

Volk, the latest collaboration of Laibach, Boris Benko and Primoz Hladnik of Silence, adds a little melancholy beauty to all of the anthems that have haunted us throughout our lives. A little bit of electronica mixed with orchestra strings and industrial-flavored-nuances is enough to make any anthem-hater sing at the top of their lungs. At the very least, you might be moved to start painting political slogans on the stone walls of your nearest government building, or join NSK art community.

Listen to the debut single, “Anglia", and be sure to pick up Laibach’s latest release Volk, storming the U.S. October 31st, 2006, on Mute.

Funny--I know you said it was a "twist" on the National Anthem, but I definitely didn't expect it to start with the opening strings..."My country 'tis of thee..." Good stuff.

That's not the National Anthem (oh say can you see...)

Why do you hate america?

("My country 'tis of thee" is based on God Save the Queen, the British National Anthem, which the song "Anglia" is based on)

Ha, true--funny. Not the National Anthem, but to be fair, My Country 'tis of Thee gets a lot of singing action stateside as well. Eddie Izzard actually does a really funny bit about how Americans don't know their own Anthem. smile
