Scarlett Johannson Covers Waits

Scarlett Johansson is ready to start a singing career - because having only one mulit-million dollar career in Hollywood is for the weak. Fox News reported this morning that Scarlett was hard at work on her debut Scarlett Sings Tom Waits. As the title suggests, Scarlett will be tackling the standards penned by the inimitable Tom Waits. The album is already in production with recording continuing through winter with a goal of a spring release via Atco, Rhino Record's recently defibrillated subsidiary.

Fox attempts to assuage our fears:

Fear not, though. Unlike some other recent pop tarts, Scarlett — who turns 22 next month — can actually sing; she is no Paris Hilton. Also, her choice of material is a tad more sophisticated. She's making a whole album of songs by Tom Waits, one of the premier singer-songwriters in the business.

That's the most preposterous thing I've heard...today, anyway.

It is preposterous. It's almost as if it's an exaggeration to illustrate a point.

That due to her (what?) age? and "attractiveness?" that she is unable to understand and interpret a Tom Waits song? I think that's pretty condescending and preposterous, too.

Do you have some insight into her "character" I'm unaware of?

Actually, that sounds pretty cool if she can pull it off.

Tom Waits is one of the most unique and talented artists of all time and arguably America's greatest songwriter.

Scarlett is flash-in-the-pan, semi-talented, one-dimensional eye candy.

Call it a hunch.

So, that would be a "no," then.

You have to admit that it is a little ridiculous. Couldn't she start a little lower on the UNIQUE SINGER-SONGWRITER list? Maybe Kris Kristofferson or Lyle Lovett? Or maybe some stuff that's more melodic and not as eccentric, like Van Morrison or...shit...I don't know....Paul Simon?

It is just a tiny bit preposterous for a non-singer (at least a non-PROFESSIONAL-singer) to release a first album consisting of covers by Tom Waits. It reeks of incredible arrogance to me. "Shit! I can do THIS!!!!"

Yeah, everyone else can stop arguing. This point wins.

(ireplace Scarlett with Lohan and I doubt Mamet would be leaping to her defense)

If she were a very good actress I might think it would be mediocre, but my money's on "shitty as hell"

Aha! But what you fail to realize is I have a huuuuuge crush on Lindsay Lohan. wink

I'm not saying it's going to be good. I'm saying it's ridiculous to categorically rule out that it could be good because Scarlett is a member of young Hollywood, or whatever. I just don't see what that has to do with her ability to understand Tom Waits.

Also, I'm going to be picturing Tom Waits with sideboob all night. Thanks, jason.

I wish she had partied with Bill Murray and the Scandanavian students, helped wash the dishes, THEN done some Captain Beefheart dressed in Wait's clothes, on an IKEA table that would then collapse under her. She gets up, dusts herself off and offers the first real smile she ever fashioned on that frozen face she drags all over hell with her. It would help if here eyes weren't dead so much, so maybe trying this will give her some healthy humility. I do like her though. I always like haunted women... up to a point. But hey, it sure is better than her doing, as some have suggested, something so painful as a Paul Simon thing - now that would give me more nightmares than the news lately. Moicy! smile
