Scarlett Johannson Covers Waits

Scarlett Johansson is ready to start a singing career - because having only one mulit-million dollar career in Hollywood is for the weak. Fox News reported this morning that Scarlett was hard at work on her debut Scarlett Sings Tom Waits. As the title suggests, Scarlett will be tackling the standards penned by the inimitable Tom Waits. The album is already in production with recording continuing through winter with a goal of a spring release via Atco, Rhino Record's recently defibrillated subsidiary.

Fox attempts to assuage our fears:

Fear not, though. Unlike some other recent pop tarts, Scarlett — who turns 22 next month — can actually sing; she is no Paris Hilton. Also, her choice of material is a tad more sophisticated. She's making a whole album of songs by Tom Waits, one of the premier singer-songwriters in the business.

This will have to suck...unless there is an accompanying video release of her doing the recording...in the nude.

Not much is sexier to me than a girl who can sing Tom Waits or Leonard Cohen songs. I just hope she can sing well.

Scarlett, while very attractive, hardly has the character to do Tom's songs any justice. I don't even have to hear her sing to know that. She's barely qualified to listen to Waits. This is a calculated grasp at instant credibility but I predict it will accomplish exactly the opposite.

I find it funny when people freak out over bad (or potentially bad) covers of songs they like. Ultimately, does it honestly diminish your enjoyment of the originals? if it does, that's pretty sad. Sure, there are some songs I like a lot that have been murdered by others and I hate them, but it doesn't make me like those songs any less. If you're not into the cover versions, why not just choose not to listen to them? There will always be bands or singers doing a disservice to great songs, but the songs will still remain great.

That's the most preposterous thing I've heard...today, anyway.

At least she's not gonna marry him and join his hokie religion.......Ooops. Wrong Tom.

C'mon! Can you imagine this young woman trying to sing "Jockey Full of Bourbon" or "Telephone Call from Istanbul"? This man has one of the most unique voices (both his vocal "voice" and his artistic "voice") in the world and this actress wants to step up and sing his stuff. It confounds me. Why would she do it?

Rod Stewart doing "Downtown Train" wasn't enough. Now we have this.

I saw kd lang do some Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen tunes in Austin a couple of years ago and she freakin' KILLED. But she can growl and howl like a real belter......
