Scarlett Johannson Covers Waits

Scarlett Johansson is ready to start a singing career - because having only one mulit-million dollar career in Hollywood is for the weak. Fox News reported this morning that Scarlett was hard at work on her debut Scarlett Sings Tom Waits. As the title suggests, Scarlett will be tackling the standards penned by the inimitable Tom Waits. The album is already in production with recording continuing through winter with a goal of a spring release via Atco, Rhino Record's recently defibrillated subsidiary.

Fox attempts to assuage our fears:

Fear not, though. Unlike some other recent pop tarts, Scarlett � who turns 22 next month � can actually sing; she is no Paris Hilton. Also, her choice of material is a tad more sophisticated. She's making a whole album of songs by Tom Waits, one of the premier singer-songwriters in the business.

The songs on her myspace are okay. I'm a huge fan of waits so its weird to hear anyone sing those songs.

Her being so hot though doesn't hurt.

I have to agree - this could be massive!
Of course it could be utter shit aswell.
Waits is a musical giant.
Johanssen is a sexual goddess.

The album seems to be either getting great reviews or horrible reviews.

I think I'm one of the few people who actually like the album. Not to say that it's the best thing I've heard or will hear this year. Nor is it as well as she could have done, that's for sure (see her cover of "Summertime" ).

See, the thing I like about it is the fact that it isn't something that everyone expected or preferred. We're so used to celebrities going the Pop route that anything else seems unorthodox. It wasn't made for the majority and the mainstream. She made what she wanted to make, and I have to admire that. Sometimes I think that nowadays, if people don't sound like they've just stepped off of American Idol, the populous rejects it as "shit" .

Though, admittedly, if she had leaned more towards songs with a little more range, she may have had more success...

And of course if you're a Tom Waits fan it seems weird for anyone but him to be doing these songs.

But to each his own, yes?

Scar Jo, owner of two "natural wonders" reveals a third; spectacular singing voice. It is breathy and sexy and the songs are by none other than tom waits who if you dont know you must have been raised in a barn. My favorite song is summertime and anywhere...The production is lush and dreamy like a warm summer dy or scar jo's own smile. Now if only they would tour together!!
